Chapter 11 - The Affair Behind the Door
Five days before the party, Victoria returned early from a prenatal appointment.
Damian’s car was outside.
Serena’s driver had been dismissed for the afternoon.
Music played softly from the upstairs hallway.
Victoria climbed the stairs and stopped outside Serena’s bedroom.
The door was not completely closed.
Through the narrow opening, she saw Damian standing behind her stepmother.
Serena wore a white slip.
Damian fastened a necklace around her throat, then kissed the side of her neck.
Victoria’s fingers curled around the railing.
She had prepared herself for fraud.
She had prepared herself for manipulation.
Nothing prepared her for the tenderness in that kiss.
It was not a sudden mistake.
It was familiar.
Practiced.
Serena turned and wrapped her arms around him.
“When this is over, Vale House will finally be ours,” she whispered.
Damian smiled.
“And Victoria?”
“She’ll have a comfortable life somewhere quiet. As long as she behaves.”
Damian kissed her again.
Victoria backed away before her legs failed.
She locked herself inside the nursery and pressed both hands over her mouth so they would not hear her sob.
The room was unfinished.
A white crib waited beside unopened boxes. On the wall, Damian had painted the words:
Daddy’s Little Grace.
Victoria stared at them until grief became anger.
He had painted that sentence while planning to take Grace’s inheritance.
She activated the necklace.
The red light blinked.
Then she whispered the date, time and everything she had witnessed.
Mara preserved the statement in the archive.
Victoria did not confront them.
That evening, she allowed Damian to hold her hand at dinner.
When Serena asked why her eyes were swollen, Victoria blamed pregnancy hormones.
Damian exchanged a satisfied look with Serena.
They believed she was weakening.
