Chapter 7 - The Moment Daniel Chose

Vanessa complained about the rolls.

Then the ham.

Then the flowers Eleanor had placed beside Robert’s photograph.

“You make everything look old,” she said.

“This is an old house.”

“It doesn’t have to feel like one.”

Daniel remained near the doorway.

Charles and two other guests had moved close enough to watch.

Vanessa lifted the saucepan lid and announced that the sauce was ruined.

Eleanor reached for it.

Vanessa pushed her hand away.

“You call this Easter dinner?”

Then she struck the egg against Eleanor’s head.

The shell broke with a sharp crack.

Gasps came from the dining room.

Eleanor closed her eyes as yolk ran down her face.

For one second, anger burned through every part of her.

Vanessa wanted that anger.

Daniel’s camera was pointed at Eleanor.

They expected screaming.

A raised spoon.

A shove.

Anything that could be described as unstable behavior.

Eleanor looked at her son.

He was smiling.

That smile hurt more than the egg.

Daniel had not merely failed to protect her.

He had agreed to the humiliation.

Eleanor placed the spoon down.

She removed her apron.

“Then you won’t need my house.”

Vanessa’s confidence wavered.

She expected fury.

Not control.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Mom, let’s not be dramatic.”

Eleanor’s phone displayed Ruth’s message.

The emergency protection order had been approved based on the recorded forgery, financial exploitation, and threatened guardianship fraud.

Ruth entered with the locksmiths and security officer.

She served Daniel and Vanessa with the order.

Daniel tried to dismiss the gathering.

“My mother is emotional.”

Ruth pointed toward the kitchen camera.

“Fortunately, we have complete video.”

Daniel looked toward the decorative clock.

Ruth shook her head.

“Not your edited angle. Ours.”

Vanessa went pale.

The emergency order required them to leave the property that evening.

Because their occupancy agreement was conditional on providing care without abuse or financial exploitation, the court had authorized immediate termination.

They could collect essential belongings under supervision.

The locksmiths would then change every exterior lock and access code.

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

“You called a lawyer against your own family?”

Eleanor wiped yolk from her cheek.

May you like

“No. I called a lawyer because my family decided I was property.”

👉 The egg attack gave Eleanor the evidence needed to reclaim her home, but Ruth’s audit was about to show the Easter guests exactly what Daniel had promised them using stolen money.
