Chapter 1 - The Egg on Her Silver Hair

The egg cracked against Eleanor Hayes’s head before she understood Vanessa had raised her hand.

Cold yolk ran through Eleanor’s silver hair, across her cheek, and down the front of her pink cardigan.

Pieces of shell clung near her eyebrow.

The bright white kitchen was filled with the smell of roasted ham, warm bread, and the orange glaze Eleanor had been stirring seconds earlier.

Vanessa stood inches away, still holding the broken shell between her fingers.

“You call this Easter dinner?”

Daniel leaned against the counter with his arms crossed.

Eleanor’s only son did not defend her.

He smirked.

Beyond the kitchen, relatives and business guests continued talking around the decorated dining table. Several had turned toward the doorway after hearing the crack.

Eleanor wiped yolk from her eye with a trembling hand.

Vanessa pointed toward the saucepan.

“The sauce is burned. The rolls are late. You had one job.”

Eleanor looked at Daniel.

He had once cried in her arms after falling from a tree.

Now he watched his wife humiliate her as though it were entertainment.

Eleanor slowly removed her flowered apron.

She folded it once and placed it beside the Easter basket on the counter.

“Then you won’t need my house.”

Daniel’s smile faded.

Eleanor’s phone lit up beside the stove.

A message from attorney Ruth Kaplan appeared on the screen.

Emergency protection order approved.

Occupancy termination ready.

Locksmiths waiting outside.

Below the message were photographs of bank records, a forged signature, and a loan application Daniel believed Eleanor had never discovered.

“Mom,” Daniel said. “Don’t do this.”

The doorbell rang.

Ruth entered moments later with two locksmiths and a private security officer.

She carried a cream-colored envelope.

The dining room fell silent.

Vanessa took one step backward, her hand still covered in egg.

Ruth placed the envelope in Daniel’s hands.

“This property is still legally hers.”

Daniel tore it open.

TERMINATION OF OCCUPANCY.

EMERGENCY FINANCIAL AUDIT PENDING.

Eleanor stood straighter.

Yolk still stained her hair, but her voice no longer shook.

“Dessert is canceled.”

👉 Daniel thought his mother was reacting to one cruel Easter insult, but the audit inside Ruth’s envelope showed that he had already placed her home at risk for nearly half a million dollars.
