Chapter 3 - The Easter Project
The Easter dinner was not really a family celebration.
Daniel had invited bankers, property developers, and potential investors.
He told Eleanor they were friends who had nowhere else to go for the holiday.
Two weeks before Easter, she overheard him speaking in the study.
“The location is perfect,” Daniel said. “Historic character, mature landscaping, room for private events.”
A man asked whether the property was available for commercial conversion.
Daniel answered, “The family controls it.”
Eleanor stood in the hallway holding clean towels.
She waited for him to say she owned the house.
He did not.
Daniel had developed a new business proposal called Hayes House Hospitality.
The plan was to transform the property into an exclusive event venue offering weddings, executive dinners, and luxury weekend stays.
Photographs of Eleanor’s home appeared throughout the presentation.
So did estimates for removing her garden, expanding the driveway, and converting Robert’s workshop into a cocktail lounge.
Eleanor found the presentation on a printer tray.
At the bottom was a projected property contribution:
Owner equity value: $620,000.
Daniel intended to use the house as his investment in the business.
He did not own one dollar of it.
When Eleanor confronted him, he laughed.
“It’s only a proposal.”
“Why are you presenting my house as yours?”
“Our house.”
“No. You live here because I allowed you.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“After everything I do for you?”
Eleanor stared at him.
“What do you do for me?”
He listed errands, doctor visits, and the time he fixed a leaking faucet.
He did not mention that Eleanor paid for the groceries he carried, the vehicle he drove, or the plumber who actually repaired the faucet.
Vanessa entered and took the presentation from Eleanor.
“Daniel is trying to build something for this family.”
“By promising property he does not own?”
“You’re going to leave it to him anyway.”
Eleanor felt something cold move through her chest.
An expected inheritance had already become permission.
She told them the house was not available.
Daniel apologized the following morning.
He said the presentation would be changed.
Eleanor wanted to believe him.
But days later, she received a bank envelope addressed to Hayes House Hospitality.
