Chapter 12 - Vanessa’s Version of Family
Vanessa moved into her sister’s apartment.
Within days, she told friends Daniel had deceived her.
She claimed she believed the house already belonged to him.
She said the egg was a moment of stress.
She described Eleanor as controlling and difficult.
Then investigators recovered messages between Vanessa and Daniel.
Six months before Easter, Vanessa had written:
Once the guardianship goes through, sell the commercial parcel first. She’ll never know what it was worth.
Daniel replied:
We need her calm until the loan closes.
Another message discussed moving Eleanor into assisted living.
Vanessa wanted a facility three counties away.
Daniel worried relatives would ask questions.
Vanessa answered:
Tell them she wandered. People believe anything once dementia is in the chart.
The messages destroyed her claim of ignorance.
She knew Eleanor was competent.
She knew Daniel did not own the house.
She knew the loan was fraudulent.
The egg attack was not an isolated loss of control.
It was part of a plan to create a public incident.
Vanessa’s decorative kitchen camera had been set to record.
Daniel intended to edit the footage and attach it to the guardianship petition.
The full recording from Ruth’s camera showed Vanessa checking the camera angle before attacking Eleanor.
It also recorded Daniel whispering, “Make sure she reacts.”
Daniel’s attorney advised him to cooperate.
Vanessa’s attorney advised the same.
Instead, both blamed each other.
Daniel said Vanessa designed the guardianship plan.
Vanessa said Daniel had resented Eleanor for years.
Both statements were partially true.
Neither erased individual responsibility.
Eleanor watched their interviews only once.
She did not feel satisfaction.
She felt exhausted.
For three years, they had eaten at her table while planning to remove her from it.
Ruth asked whether Eleanor wanted to pursue the strongest available charges.
“Yes.”
The answer came without hesitation.
“Are you certain?”
“I spent too long believing consequences were cruelty.”
She looked at Robert’s letter.
“They are not.”
The prosecutor prepared charges for forgery, financial exploitation of an elderly adult, attempted fraud, identity theft, and conspiracy.
Vanessa also faced an assault charge for the Easter attack.
Daniel called Eleanor before the warrants were issued.
