Chapter 4 - The Signature in Blue Ink
Eleanor waited until Daniel and Vanessa left for dinner.
Then she opened the bank envelope.
Inside was a notice confirming a home-equity application for $475,000.
The borrower was listed as Eleanor Hayes.
The co-authorized representative was Daniel Hayes.
Eleanor had never applied for a loan.
A copy of the application carried her signature in blue ink.
It looked almost perfect.
The curve of the E.
The small break between her first and last names.
Even the uneven final stroke caused by arthritis.
But Eleanor knew she had not signed it.
She called Ruth Kaplan.
Ruth had handled Robert’s estate and remained one of Eleanor’s closest friends.
“Do not confront Daniel yet,” Ruth warned.
“He forged my name.”
“We need to know how far this has gone.”
The bank temporarily froze the application while Ruth requested the full file.
The documents contained a notarized authorization allowing Daniel to manage financing related to the house.
The notary was a woman named Amanda Pierce.
Vanessa’s cousin.
The authorization claimed Eleanor signed it six months earlier during a family financial-planning meeting.
No such meeting had occurred.
Ruth also found monthly transfers from Eleanor’s checking account to a business account controlled by Daniel.
The transfers began small.
Eight hundred dollars.
Then fifteen hundred.
Then five thousand.
By Easter, more than $96,000 had disappeared.
Eleanor rarely checked the account because Daniel had offered to pay household bills online.
He had saved her banking password on his computer.
“You trusted your son,” Ruth said gently.
“I gave him access to pay the electric bill.”
“He used that access to support his business.”
Eleanor covered her mouth.
Robert had left enough money for her to live comfortably, but not carelessly.
Daniel knew that.
He had watched his father work for every dollar.
Ruth advised Eleanor to change all passwords, preserve records, and place cameras in the study and kitchen.
“If they realize the loan is frozen, they may try another route.”
Eleanor did not want to spy on her own son.
Then she remembered Vanessa asking whether her will had been updated.
She agreed.
Two days later, the study camera recorded Daniel holding an old birthday card beneath a scanner.
The card contained Eleanor’s signature.
Vanessa stood beside him.
