Chapter 13 - The Call Daniel Made Too Late

Eleanor answered with Ruth beside her.

“Mom, I need you to listen.”

“I’m listening.”

“Vanessa pushed everything too far.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“Did she forge my signature alone?”

Daniel hesitated.

“She handled the documents.”

“Did she transfer money from my account?”

“We both used the account for household expenses.”

“Did she pay Amanda Pierce from your personal bank?”

Silence.

“Did she prepare the guardianship petition without you?”

Daniel’s voice broke.

“I was desperate.”

“For what?”

“The business. A future. Something that was mine.”

“The house was not yours.”

“It was going to be.”

“After I died.”

Daniel inhaled sharply.

“You always say things like that to make me feel guilty.”

“I am stating the truth.”

“You let me believe the house was my future.”

“I let you live here.”

“You gave me everything and then held ownership over my head.”

“No, Daniel. You mistook receiving something for owning the person who gave it.”

He began crying.

Eleanor had rarely heard her son cry as an adult.

Her body responded before her judgment did.

She wanted to comfort him.

Then he said, “Tell the prosecutor you approved the loan verbally.”

The tears stopped reaching her.

He was still asking for rescue.

“Did you call to apologize or to make me lie?”

“I’m trying to keep our family together.”

“You tried to have me declared incompetent.”

“That would never have become permanent.”

“You planned to move me away and sell my property.”

“Vanessa said—”

“You signed.”

Daniel became angry.

“So you’re choosing prison for your son?”

“No. You chose fraud. The court will choose the sentence.”

He ended the call.

Hours later, Daniel and Vanessa were arrested separately.

News cameras captured Vanessa leaving her sister’s apartment in handcuffs.

Daniel surrendered through his attorney.

Eleanor did not watch the footage.

She spent the afternoon repainting the kitchen wall.

The egg stain had reached farther than anyone noticed during dinner.

She covered it with a fresh coat of white.

But when she reached the spot near the stove, her hand began shaking.

Ruth took the roller from her.

“You don’t have to erase everything today.”

Eleanor looked around the kitchen.

“I don’t want this room to belong to that moment.”

“It won’t.”

“How do you know?”

May you like

“Because you are still here.”

👉 The arrests ended Daniel and Vanessa’s control over the house, but the coming trial would force Eleanor to describe the humiliation in front of strangers.
