Chapter 19 - The Verdict They Couldn’t Buy
“Guilty.”
The word echoed through the courtroom.
Richard was convicted of murder conspiracy, fraud and obstruction.
Celeste was convicted of the same charges.
Trent was convicted of conspiracy, financial fraud, false imprisonment, aggravated assault and attempting to obtain custody through fabricated medical evidence.
The mechanic’s testimony connected all three Holloways to Thomas’s death.
The emergency recording connected them to Maya’s abuse.
The company files connected them to years of theft.
They could not blame Maya.
They could not buy another witness.
They could not bury another document.
At sentencing, the judge described their crimes as a campaign built on greed, violence and calculated cruelty.
Richard and Celeste received sentences that ensured they would spend the rest of their lives in prison.
Trent received decades behind bars with no possibility of contacting Maya or Grace.
As officers led him away, Trent looked back.
“You ruined everything,” he said.
Maya stood with Grace asleep against her chest.
“No,” she answered. “I stopped you from ruining anything else.”
The stolen company funds were recovered through asset seizures.
The board formally cleared Maya of every accusation.
Directors who had ignored the warning signs resigned.
Maya became chairwoman but appointed an experienced independent executive to run daily operations.
She no longer wanted power simply because someone had tried to steal it.
She wanted the company to become what her father had intended.
Safe.
Accountable.
Useful.
After the trial, Maya and Alex visited Thomas’s grave.
Maya placed the repaired watch beside the headstone for a moment.
“You were right about him,” she whispered. “I’m sorry it took me so long.”
Alex stood beside her.
“Dad never wanted an apology. He wanted you alive.”
Before they left, Alex handed Maya a key.
It belonged to the small lakeside house where she and Alex had grown up.
He had restored it while the trial was underway.
“No cameras,” he said. “No smart locks. And no one enters unless you invite them.”
