Chapter 11 - The Man at the Door

Trent tried to step back.
The officers moved faster.
They forced him against the wall and handcuffed him.
Celeste jumped from the sofa.
“This is a misunderstanding!”
Richard pointed toward Maya.
“She fell. She has been unstable for months.”
Agent Brooks picked up the cracked emergency phone.
“The device recorded the last fourteen minutes.”
Celeste stopped speaking.
Alex crossed the room and knelt beside Maya.
For several seconds, neither of them said anything.
Maya had imagined this moment hundreds of times.
She had imagined screaming at him.
Hitting him.
Demanding to know why he had disappeared.
Instead, she touched his face with trembling fingers.
“You came.”
Alex’s eyes filled with tears.
“I should have come sooner.”
Paramedics rushed in.
Maya clutched Alex’s sleeve as they examined her.
“The baby?”
“We’re taking you to the hospital,” one paramedic said. “The heartbeat is strong, but we need to monitor both of you.”
Trent twisted toward them.
“That’s my child!”
Alex stood.
“You lost the right to use that child as a weapon.”
Police led Trent away.
Richard and Celeste were temporarily detained for questioning, but Agent Brooks warned Alex that they might not remain in custody without stronger evidence linking them directly to the assault.
As Maya was placed on a stretcher, she saw Richard whisper something to his attorney over the phone.
He was still calm.
Still confident.
Alex walked beside the stretcher toward the elevator.
At the hospital, doctors confirmed that Maya had suffered severe bruising and dehydration, but the baby had not been injured.
Only after the room became quiet did Alex sit beside her bed.
Maya turned toward him.
“Why are they so certain they can escape?”
“Because they’ve escaped before.”
“What does that mean?”
Alex placed Thomas Carter’s old challenge coin on the blanket.
“Dad’s brakes didn’t fail by accident.”
Maya stopped breathing.
Alex looked into her eyes.
