Chapter 18 - The Child They Couldn’t Take

Alex drove Maya to the hospital.
By the time they arrived, the contractions were less than three minutes apart.
Doctors rushed her into the maternity unit.
The baby’s heart rate began dropping.
Maya gripped Alex’s hand.
“I’m scared.”
Alex leaned close.
“You don’t have to pretend you’re not.”
For most of her marriage, Maya had believed strength meant hiding fear.
Trent had used every tear as evidence that she was weak.
Alex did not ask her to stop crying.
He stayed beside her.
After an emergency delivery, a little girl was born.
She was small.
She was furious.
And she screamed before the doctor had fully lifted her into the light.
Maya began laughing through her tears.
The doctor placed the baby against her chest.
Maya named her Grace Thomas Carter.
Grace for the second chance they had been given.
Thomas for the grandfather who had died protecting her.
Carter because Maya wanted her daughter to carry the name Trent had tried to erase.
Alex touched the baby’s tiny hand.
“She has Dad’s grip.”
“She has my temper,” Maya said.
“That will help.”
Security remained outside the hospital room.
Trent was prohibited from contacting Maya.
His attorney attempted to demand information about the birth, but the protective order blocked every request.
Three months later, the criminal trial began.
The mechanic who had altered Thomas’s brakes accepted a plea agreement and testified against the Holloways.
He described Richard’s payment.
Celeste’s instructions.
Trent’s knowledge.
Maya testified about the forged documents, the isolation and the night in the penthouse.
Trent stared at her from the defense table.
He expected her to look away.
She did not.
When the jury returned, Maya held Alex’s hand beneath the table.
