Chapter 12 - The File Her Father Left Behind
Alex told Maya everything he could.
Years earlier, Carter Sentinel had won a series of federal security contracts.
Soon afterward, Thomas discovered that several subcontractors were submitting inflated invoices.
The fake vendors were controlled through shell corporations.
Money flowed from Carter Sentinel into private accounts connected to Richard and Celeste.
Trent had been placed inside the company to approve internal payments.
Thomas confronted him.
Trent denied everything.
Then Thomas secretly contacted Alex, who had left active military service and joined a federal investigative unit specializing in defense fraud.
Alex began gathering evidence.
Before he could make arrests, someone inside the government leaked information about the investigation.
A witness disappeared.
Alex received threats.
Federal officials moved him under an assumed identity while they searched for the leak.
Thomas continued collecting evidence alone.
“He should have stopped,” Maya said through tears.
“He was trying to protect you.”
“Then why didn’t he tell me?”
“Because you loved Trent.”
Maya turned toward the window.
The truth hurt because it was fair.
She had defended her husband every time Thomas raised a concern.
The night before Thomas died, he called Alex and said he had found proof that Trent was preparing to transfer company control through Maya’s marriage.
Thomas promised to deliver the evidence the following morning.
He never arrived.
His car went through the guardrail at 5:40 a.m.
The police found no evidence of mechanical tampering.
The garage cameras had stopped working for eleven minutes.
Exactly when Thomas’s car was serviced.
“We know someone paid the mechanic,” Alex said. “But the money passed through four shell accounts.”
“What evidence did Dad leave?”
“An encrypted drive. We could open part of it, but the final section requires a second key.”
“Where is it?”
“I hoped you knew.”
Maya closed her eyes.
Then she remembered the box she had taken from her father’s hospital belongings after the crash.
Inside it was his broken smartwatch.
She had never charged it.
She had never allowed Trent to see it.
