Chapter 10 - No One Is Coming
Alex was sitting inside a black SUV beneath the penthouse tower when the alert reached him.
Maya’s location appeared on his screen.
Then the emergency recording began.
He heard glass breaking.
He heard Maya cry out.
He heard Trent ordering her to sign.
Alex’s entire expression changed.
Beside him sat Special Agent Lena Brooks, the federal investigator who had spent three years helping him build the case against the Holloways.
Two city police officers waited in an unmarked vehicle behind them.
Alex pressed the building security channel.
“Cut the penthouse power. Unlock the emergency elevator. Now.”
Upstairs, Trent stood over Maya.
“No one is coming for you.”
Maya held one arm around her stomach.
The other hand rested on the carpet near the cracked emergency phone.
Celeste raised her wineglass.
“Teach her again.”
Trent lowered the bat beside Maya’s leg.
“You have five seconds to agree.”
Maya looked at the screen.
SOS SENT.
“He got it,” she whispered.
Trent saw the name.
Alex.
He snatched the phone from the floor.
For years, Trent had told Maya that Alex abandoned her.
He had shown her fabricated military correspondence.
He had even arranged a private memorial ceremony to convince her that her brother was dead.
Now Alex’s name was glowing in Trent’s hand.
Trent raised the phone to smash it.
The lights went out.
The smart lock on the front door released.
DING.
The elevator arrived.
Footsteps approached.
Trent gripped the bat and moved toward the entrance.
The door opened.
Alex stood in the hallway wearing a black coat over a tactical vest.
Police officers and federal agents stood behind him.
He looked past Trent and saw Maya on the floor.
Something cold entered his eyes.
“Drop it.”
Trent lifted the bat slightly.
Alex took one step forward.
“You will not get a second warning.”
