Chapter 16 - The Secret Inside the Trust
The document was dated three weeks before Thomas died.
It created an irrevocable protective trust.
Thomas had anticipated that Trent might pressure Maya into signing away her shares.
To prevent it, he transferred Carter Sentinel’s controlling voting rights into the trust.
Maya remained the primary beneficiary.
Her future children were protected beneficiaries.
Alex was named independent trustee until Maya confirmed, under protected legal supervision, that she was acting freely.
Any transfer signed under coercion was automatically invalid.
The boardroom attorney read the provision twice.
The sale could not proceed.
Trent had never controlled Maya’s shares.
Neither could Richard.
Neither could Celeste.
For years, they had abused, isolated and threatened Maya for something they had never legally possessed.
The board chairman canceled the vote.
But the drive contained more than trust documents.
It held emails between Trent and his parents.
In one, Celeste wrote:
THOMAS WILL NEVER APPROVE THE TRANSFER WHILE HE’S ALIVE.
Richard replied:
THEN WE REMOVE THE OBSTACLE.
A later message instructed an employee to disable the garage cameras.
Another authorized a large payment to the mechanic.
Trent’s messages were more cautious.
He never directly mentioned the brakes.
But one email sent after Thomas’s funeral read:
THE OLD MAN IS GONE. MAYA BELIEVES THE ACCIDENT REPORT. MOVE FORWARD.
Maya stared at the screen.
She had slept beside Trent that night.
He had held her while she cried.
He had promised to help her survive the worst loss of her life.
All while celebrating the men who caused it.
The prosecutor opened the final folder.
Its title was not about Thomas.
It was about Maya.
POST-BIRTH CONTINGENCY.
Inside were emails discussing forged medical records, a private psychiatric facility and a plan to separate Maya from her child immediately after delivery.
One email suggested making the separation permanent.
Maya placed both hands over her stomach.
Alex moved beside her.
“You’re safe now.”
Maya looked at the evidence.
