The hidden board member was Charles Baines.
He had served Warren AeroMed for sixteen years.
George trusted him.
Claire had known his family since childhood.
Charles chaired the board’s audit committee.
He was the person responsible for detecting exactly the fraud Mark committed.
Instead, he had been approving it.
Mark promised Charles a five-percent ownership interest in Helvetia Medical Aviation.
In return, Charles delayed audits, rejected employee complaints, and repeated Mark’s claims that Claire no longer wanted leadership responsibilities.
Their plan required him to remain in Chicago.
Once Mark reached Zurich, Charles would call an emergency board meeting.
He would present Claire’s forged resignation.
Then he would approve the transfer of remaining contracts to Helvetia.
Mark expected the board to follow him before anyone reached Claire.
The airport arrests disrupted the timing but did not stop Charles immediately.
He received no warning because Mark’s phone had been seized.
At 9:00 a.m., Charles entered Warren AeroMed headquarters carrying the forged resignation.
He called the emergency meeting.
Most directors believed Mark was already in the air.
Claire joined through video.
Charles looked startled.
“Claire, we understood you were unwell.”
“From whom?”
“Mark expressed concerns.”
“Mark is in federal custody.”
The room became silent.
Maya appeared beside Claire.
She served the board with the emergency asset order and trust documents.
Mark and Vanessa’s authority had been suspended.
Every Helvetia contract was frozen.
Charles attempted to adjourn.

CHARLES:
I present resignation at nine. By the time she understands, Zurich controls the routes.
MARK:
Keep her away from the office. Say doctors advised rest.
Charles’s face became gray.
He claimed the messages were fabricated.
Federal agents entered the boardroom.
A warrant authorized seizure of his devices and office records.
Charles looked toward Claire.
“Your father would never humiliate a director publicly.”
Claire answered, “My father would ask why the audit chair helped steal his company.”
Agents escorted him out.
The board appointed an independent emergency committee.
Claire declined the title of chief executive.
She had spent years watching Mark concentrate power.
She wanted evidence reviewed before choosing permanent leadership.
Henry Lawson represented pilots and flight crews.
An outside forensic accountant controlled treasury operations.
Maya oversaw trust protection.
Claire retained voting authority but refused to become the only person allowed to question decisions.
The company remained fragile.
Fuel accounts had been drained.
Aircraft leases were close to default.
Hospitals wanted reassurance.
News of the airport arrest had begun spreading.
Mark’s public-relations team released a statement before losing access.
It claimed Claire was a jealous wife using federal power to punish an innocent husband.
The statement described Vanessa as a colleague who happened to be traveling on the same flight.
Then airport photographs appeared.
Mark’s hand rested on Vanessa’s back inside the boarding line.
