Chapter 16 - The Gate She Avoided

For three years, Claire avoided O’Hare’s international terminal.

She traveled through Midway when possible.

Warren AeroMed meetings occurred in private hangars.

When international travel became necessary, she departed from other cities.

She told herself the choice was practical.

Her therapist called it what it was.

“A boundary can protect you. Avoidance begins controlling where you’re allowed to live.”

Claire did not rush back.

Recovery did not require recreating the airport scene for symbolic victory.

She waited until a real reason appeared.

Warren AeroMed had developed a partnership with a Swiss children’s hospital.

The program coordinated emergency flights for children requiring rare surgeries unavailable in their home countries.

The first flight would depart from O’Hare to Zurich.

Henry asked whether Claire wanted another executive to attend.

She almost said yes.

Then she looked at the route.

Zurich.

The destination Mark believed would free him from consequences.

Claire agreed to go.

On the morning of departure, Maya accompanied her to the terminal.

Not as a lawyer.

As a friend.

The white lights looked the same.

The security lines.

The glass walls.

The departure screens.

Claire stopped near the place where Mark had kissed her forehead.

Her body remembered before her thoughts did.

Her hands became cold.

Maya asked, “Do you want to leave?”

Claire considered it.

“No.”

“Do you need me to stay beside you?”

“For now.”

They stood quietly.

Claire did not search for the exact tile where she had cried.

Memory did not need perfect geography.

A young medical-flight coordinator approached with the patient family.

A ten-year-old girl held a stuffed bear and looked terrified.

Claire knelt several feet away.

“You don’t have to talk to me,” she said. “I only wanted you to know the plane is ready when you are.”

The girl asked whether Claire would be on it.

“Yes.”

“Are you scared of flying?”

Claire smiled.

“Not of flying.”

That answer was enough.

During boarding, Claire’s phone displayed the same route number Mark had once used.

This time, every passenger was supposed to be there.

Every contract had been independently reviewed.

Every medical need was real.

Claire looked through the terminal glass.

Years earlier, she had watched Mark turn back after his accounts froze.

Today, no one was running.

No one was pretending.

Maya hugged her.

“Call when you land.”

Claire laughed softly at the familiar words.

“I will.”

She entered the jet bridge.

The aircraft departed with Claire onboard by choice.

👉 Zurich had once represented Mark’s escape; now it was the destination of a mission Claire had rebuilt around saving someone else.
