Chapter 5 - Two Tickets and No Return
The reservation appeared under an executive travel code.
MARK WARREN.
VANESSA COLE.
CHICAGO TO ZURICH.
ONE WAY.
The departure date was three weeks away.
Mark had told Claire he was attending a four-day aviation summit in Frankfurt.
Vanessa claimed she would be visiting her sister in Boston.
Neither story was true.
A second reservation listed two long-term hotel suites in Zurich.
Residency documents had been filed using Mark and Vanessa’s names at the same address.
Claire sat alone in her father’s old office and stared at the screen.
She had known about the financial betrayal.
The affair became real in a different way.
Every late meeting.
Every conference Vanessa attended.
Every evening Mark came home smelling of unfamiliar perfume.
Claire had trained herself not to ask because Mark treated suspicion as weakness.
Now the evidence required no interpretation.
Maya arrived twenty minutes later.
Claire remained in the chair.
“I still want him to walk through the door and explain it.”
Maya did not tell her she should feel stronger.
She placed water on the desk and waited.
Claire began crying.
“They planned my marriage together.”
“We don’t know every part yet.”
“We know enough.”
Maya agreed.
The tears Claire later shed at O’Hare were not entirely a performance.
She had loved Mark.
Or at least the person he allowed her to believe existed.
Knowing the goodbye was fake did not make losing that person painless.
The investigation continued.
Maya contacted federal authorities because the scheme involved interstate medical contracts, forged banking authorizations, and international wire transfers.
Agent Rafael Ortiz took the case.
He advised against arresting Mark immediately.
The known fraud was serious, but several accounts and conspirators remained hidden.
If Mark believed the plan was exposed, he might destroy devices or activate transfers from another location.
The Zurich departure could provide the moment investigators needed.
Boarding would confirm intent to flee.
The international baggage system would preserve the chain of custody for anything they carried.
Passport scans would place both conspirators together after they had publicly denied any personal relationship.
Claire hated the idea of waiting.
“What if he moves the money before then?”
Maya showed her the protection plan.
An emergency freeze order would remain sealed.
Banks would monitor every transfer.
The company’s access system could remove Mark and Vanessa within seconds.
Warrants would be executed only after both entered the secure boarding area.
The aircraft would leave without them.
“We need them to believe escape is possible,” Agent Ortiz said.
Claire looked at the one-way tickets.
“Then let them believe it.”
At home, she behaved exactly as Mark expected.
She asked what he wanted packed.
She reminded him to take his medication.
She cried when he described being away for only four days.
Mark interpreted every tear as dependence.
Meanwhile, Claire installed a forensic copy device on the home router.
It captured encrypted traffic between Mark, Vanessa, and the Zurich accounts.
The night before the flight, Mark emptied the wall safe.
He claimed he was moving documents to the company vault.
Claire knew he was packing them.
Then she noticed her mother’s diamond bracelet was gone.
Mark told her it must have been lost during the burglary months earlier.
