Chapter 13 - Why Claire Cried
The criminal trial began eighteen months after the airport arrest.
The courtroom filled with pilots, medical crews, hospital representatives, and former Warren AeroMed employees.
Mark entered in a dark suit.
He looked like the man who once rescued a company.
Vanessa sat separately after entering her plea.
Charles Baines waited to testify.
Prosecutors began with the O’Hare surveillance footage.
Claire embracing Mark.
Mark kissing her forehead.
Vanessa watching from behind.
The defense attorney paused the video on Claire’s tears.
“Mrs. Warren knew about the investigation, correct?”
“Yes.”
“She knew agents were waiting?”
“Yes.”
“Yet she begged her husband not to forget her?”
Claire looked toward the jury.
“I said the words he expected.”
“So the emotion was false?”
“No.”
The attorney raised an eyebrow.
Claire continued.
“I knew he planned to flee. I also knew the man I had loved never existed in the way I believed. Both things were true.”
“Were you performing?”
“I was preserving an operation. I was also saying goodbye to my marriage.”
The attorney attempted to portray the airport scene as manipulation.
Claire did not deny that she concealed knowledge from Mark.
“He had forged my identity, moved company funds, and prepared to flee the country. Investigators asked me not to alert him.”
The prosecution displayed Vanessa’s black suitcase.
Hardware wallets.
Corporate seals.
Forged medical claims.
Claire’s copied passport.
The bracelet.
A jeweler confirmed the serial number.
Mark watched the bracelet enter evidence.
For the first time, his expression showed regret.
Not for stealing it.
For allowing Vanessa to wear it publicly.
Vanessa testified for two days.
She described the manufactured financing crisis and Zurich plan.
Mark’s attorney attacked her credibility.
“You lied for fourteen years.”
“Yes.”
“You stole money.”
“Yes.”
“You accepted a deal to save yourself.”
“Yes.”
“Why should anyone believe you?”
Vanessa answered, “They shouldn’t believe me alone. They should believe the bank records, flight manifests, devices, and messages Mark wrote.”
Charles testified next.
Henry explained the diverted aircraft.
Affected families described delayed medical flights.
The company’s retirement trustee described missing contributions.
Then Maya presented the sealed freeze order.
It had been approved before the airport departure based on evidence gathered over months.
Claire had not invented a case after seeing the bracelet.
The bracelet confirmed the betrayal.
It did not create the fraud.
Mark chose to testify.
He said Claire had always been emotional and indecisive.
The prosecutor asked one question.
“If she was incapable of business decisions, why did you forge so many documents claiming she made them?”
