Chapter 1 - Let the Plane Depart
“I’ll call when I land.”
Mark Warren kissed his wife’s forehead beneath the cold white lights of O’Hare International Airport.
Claire clung to the front of his black suit as if letting go would destroy her.
Tears covered her face.
Her shoulders shook against his chest.
Mark stroked her hair with practiced tenderness while hundreds of travelers moved around them.
“I’ll only be gone four days,” he whispered.
Claire knew there was no return ticket.
Twenty feet behind him, Vanessa Cole stood beside a black suitcase wearing a fitted black dress and the expression of a woman who believed she had already won.
A diamond bracelet sparkled around her wrist.
Claire recognized every stone.
The bracelet had belonged to her mother.
Mark claimed it disappeared during a house burglary eight months earlier.
Claire tightened her hands around his jacket.
“Please don’t forget me.”
Mark smiled against her hair.
“As if I could.”
Over his shoulder, he looked directly at Vanessa.
The glance lasted less than a second.
It contained more intimacy than anything he had shown Claire in months.
Mark gently removed Claire’s arms and walked toward international security.
Vanessa waited several steps before following him.
They did not walk side by side until they believed Claire could no longer see them.
Claire lowered her head and wiped her face.
Her hand entered her coat pocket.
The screen of her hidden phone displayed a message from attorney Maya Chen.
ASSET FREEZE APPROVED. WARRANTS SEALED. WAITING FOR FINAL BOARDING CONFIRMATION.
Claire typed four words.
LET THE PLANE DEPART.
Inside the airport operations room, Maya stood beside Federal Agent Rafael Ortiz.
The Zurich flight appeared on a wall of live departure screens.
Mark and Vanessa’s passports had been scanned.
Their one-way tickets were confirmed.
Vanessa’s black suitcase had entered the international baggage system.
Agent Ortiz watched the aircraft begin boarding.
“Lock him out now.”
Every account connected to Mark lit up with alerts.
COMPANY ACCESS REVOKED.
TRANSFER BLOCKED.
BANK ACCOUNTS FROZEN.
FEDERAL INVESTIGATION OPENED.
Mark stopped inside the jet bridge.
Vanessa’s phone began vibrating at the same time.
Her face went white.
“What’s happening?”
Mark turned toward the glass wall overlooking the terminal.
Claire stood in the distance.
She was no longer crying.
Two federal agents appeared behind Mark.
Another blocked Vanessa’s path.
Mark looked at Claire through the glass.
“Claire… what did you do?”
She held his gaze.
The aircraft remained scheduled to leave on time.
But Mark and Vanessa would not be on it.
Their checked luggage would be removed under a federal warrant, and the Zurich flight would depart without them.
Claire had not begged him to stay.
