Chapter 3 - The Woman in Silver

Vivien entered Serena’s home the following afternoon without knocking.
She wore a white designer suit and carried a garment bag.
Carter followed several steps behind her.
Serena stood in the foyer holding a cup of tea.
“What is she doing here?”
Vivien smiled.
“I’m helping Carter prepare for the gala.”
“The gala is six weeks away.”
“There’s a great deal to organize.”
Carter took the garment bag from Vivien.
“She’ll be using the east guest suite while the presentation is finalized.”
Serena stared at him.
“You invited another woman to live in our home?”
“She is a company consultant.”
“Consultants usually stay in hotels.”
Vivien walked toward the staircase.
“Hotels make collaboration difficult.”
Serena’s fingers tightened around the cup.
She had suspected the affair for months.
Perfume on Carter’s jacket.
Messages that disappeared when she entered the room.
Business trips booked with one hotel room instead of two.
She had waited because suspicion was not evidence.
Carter moved closer.
“Do not create a scene.”
“In my own home?”
“This house belongs to the family trust.”
Serena almost smiled.
Carter noticed.
“What is amusing?”
“Nothing.”
He had spoken with absolute confidence.
Yet he had never read the complete trust agreement.
Charles had always told him the documents were outdated legal formalities.
Carter believed his father controlled the trust and that he would inherit everything after Charles retired.
Serena knew otherwise.
Her late mother’s attorney had once told her, “Never explain your protection to someone who benefits from believing you are powerless.”
Vivien paused halfway up the stairs.
“Oh, Serena. The gala dress code is metallic.”
She glanced at Serena’s simple cream dress.
“I thought you should know before you accidentally look like staff.”
Carter laughed.
Serena placed her cup on the entry table.
“Thank you for warning me.”
Vivien expected anger.
She received courtesy instead.
That unsettled her.
Over the next week, Vivien occupied the house as though she had already replaced Serena.
She moved Serena’s photographs.
She instructed employees.
She sat beside Carter at breakfast wearing his shirt.
Serena documented everything.
Dates.
Times.
Messages.
Corporate files Carter discussed in Vivien’s presence.
Then one morning, she found a draft announcement on the home-office printer.
CARTER AND VIVIEN TO LEAD THE NEXT ERA OF THE COMPANY.
At the bottom was a note in Carter’s handwriting.
