Chapter 2 - The Invisible Wife
Six months earlier, Serena sat alone at the far end of a dining table designed for twenty people.
Carter sat beside Charles at the opposite end.
They discussed acquisitions, private aircraft, and the company’s upcoming centennial gala as though Serena were not in the room.
She had become accustomed to being ignored.
When Serena married Carter seven years earlier, he had called her his equal.
He admired the way she understood balance sheets. He asked for her opinions before every major decision.
After the wedding, that admiration slowly became discomfort.
Carter wanted a beautiful wife at charity dinners.
He did not want a wife who noticed flaws in his plans.
Whenever Serena questioned an investment, he accused her of embarrassing him.
Whenever she offered a better solution, he presented it to the board as his own.
Over time, Serena stopped correcting him publicly.
That silence became the foundation of Carter’s confidence.
At dinner, Charles passed his son a folder.
“The gala will announce you as the next executive chairman.”
Carter smiled.
Serena looked up.
“The board has approved the succession?”
Charles avoided her eyes.
“The vote is considered a formality.”
“A formality is still a vote.”
Carter placed his glass down.
“This is a family matter.”
“I am your wife.”
“You are not on the board.”
Serena’s expression did not change.
Technically, Carter was correct.
She held no visible corporate title.
Her name appeared on no office door.
Most employees believed she lived comfortably because she had married into wealth.
Only Charles knew that Serena’s connection to the company had begun decades before her marriage.
Even Carter had never been told the complete truth.
Charles changed the subject.
“Vivien will lead the gala’s strategic presentation.”
Serena recognized the name.
Vivien had recently been hired as an outside brand consultant.
She had no experience managing a global company.
But she had been seen leaving Carter’s private office after midnight more than once.
Serena looked directly at her husband.
“Why is a consultant presenting your succession plan?”
Carter smiled without warmth.
“Because she understands what the company needs.”
“And I don’t?”
“You understand how to criticize.”
Serena lowered her eyes to her untouched dinner.
Carter mistook the movement for surrender.
He did not see her notice the confidential merger proposal partially exposed beneath Charles’s folder.
