Chapter 11 - The Emergency Vote
The board suite overlooked the ballroom through one-way glass.
Below, guests arrived beneath towers of white flowers and gold light.
Serena entered the suite at six o’clock.
Several directors looked surprised to see her.
One whispered, “Why is Carter’s wife here?”
Nora placed the trust agreement on the table.
“Because the reserve funding the company belongs to her.”
The room went silent.
Thomas presented the financial evidence.
Forged signatures.
Shell companies.
Secret fees.
Unauthorized use of Charles’s credentials.
A proposed acquisition designed to rescue Vivien’s failing business at company expense.
Charles arrived ten minutes late.
When he saw Serena, his face hardened.
“This meeting concerns succession.”
“It concerns fraud,” Serena answered.
Carter was still downstairs greeting investors.
Charles closed the door.
“Serena, whatever has happened between you and my son should not become a corporate spectacle.”
“He pledged two billion dollars of protected capital using my forged signature.”
“He made a reckless decision.”
“He committed fraud.”
Charles lowered his voice.
“The company will survive if we handle this privately.”
Serena looked around the table.
“That sentence is why Carter believed he could do it.”
One independent director asked Nora to explain the activation clause.
Nora read it aloud.
The trust could immediately recall its liquidity reserve if a spouse or executive attempted to seize or redirect protected assets through coercion, deception, or forged authorization.
The board could prevent the withdrawal only by suspending the unauthorized executives and freezing the disputed transaction.
Charles stared at the document.
“Elaine never showed me that amendment.”
“She added it after Serena’s eighteenth birthday,” Nora said.
“Why?”
“Because she knew affection could be used as a financial weapon.”
The directors began voting.
Cancel the acquisition.
Freeze Carter’s signing authority.
Suspend Charles’s dormant credentials.
Recognize Serena as emergency trust representative.
Authorize the recall of two billion dollars unless the company restored compliant control before midnight.
The vote passed.
Charles remained seated after everyone else stood.
“You planned this humiliation.”
Serena shook her head.
“Carter planned the humiliation. I planned to survive it.”
Downstairs, music rose.
A staff member entered.
“Mr. Carter is about to begin the succession presentation.”
Thomas looked at Serena.
“We can stop the event.”
“No.”
Charles stared at her.
“You want him exposed publicly.”
“I want him to make his choice in front of the people he intended to deceive.”
Serena left the suite and descended toward the ballroom.
At the bottom of the staircase, she saw Carter entering through the main doors.
Vivien was on his arm.
