Chapter 14 - The Truth About Elaine
Guests remained in the ballroom while attorneys secured the company devices.
No one was allowed to remove files.
Carter tried to leave.
Two security officers blocked him.
“You cannot detain me,” he said.
Nora stepped forward.
“We are preserving evidence related to corporate fraud. You may leave after surrendering company property.”
Carter pulled the executive phone from his pocket and threw it onto a table.
Vivien attempted to follow him.
Thomas stopped her.
“The laptop in your bag belongs to the company.”
“It contains personal materials.”
“It also contains merger records.”
Her hands began to shake.
Serena moved toward the stage.
She did not take the microphone to celebrate.
She took it because the room deserved the truth Carter intended to hide.
“My mother, Elaine, helped create this company thirty-five years ago,” Serena said.
Charles closed his eyes.
Many older executives recognized the name.
Most younger guests did not.
“She designed the financial systems that turned a failing business into the company represented here tonight. Her family trust supplied the original capital. She remained out of public view because she valued the work more than recognition.”
Serena looked toward Elaine’s nearly invisible photograph on the gala screen.
“After she became ill, she protected her ownership for me. Charles managed the company. But the foundation remained in trust.”
A director instructed the technician to replace Carter’s succession video.
Old photographs appeared.
Elaine standing beside factory workers.
Elaine presenting financial models.
Elaine and Charles signing the first international agreement.
Charles stepped onto the stage.
His voice was low.
“I allowed history to describe me as the sole founder.”
The admission stunned the room.
“Elaine believed public attention would distract from the work. After her death, I continued the story because it benefited me.”
Serena looked at him.
“And because the truth would have limited Carter’s claim.”
“Yes.”
Charles faced the audience.
“I also allowed my son to mistreat Serena because I feared conflict would damage the company.”
Carter stared at him.
“You knew she controlled it?”
“I knew she would someday.”
“And you never told me?”
Charles’s expression hardened.
“Your behavior tonight proves Elaine was right to protect it from you.”
Carter turned toward Serena.
“You married me without telling me you owned everything.”
Serena answered quietly.
“I married you hoping it would not matter.”
Vivien rose from the floor.
“You deceived him.”
Serena looked at her.

“No. I allowed him to reveal who he was when he believed I had nothing.”
👉 Serena had reclaimed her mother’s name, but the financial records were about to reveal that Vivien’s relationship with Carter had begun as a business arrangement long before it became an affair.
