Chapter 16 - The Morning After
The emergency board meeting resumed at eight the next morning.
Carter arrived with two attorneys.
Vivien did not attend.
Her lawyer had advised her to cooperate separately.
Serena sat at the head of the table.
Carter stopped in the doorway.
“That is my seat.”
“No,” Serena said. “It was the chief executive’s seat.”
“You are not chief executive.”
“Neither are you.”
The board resolution lay in front of him.
Carter had been suspended from all executive duties.
His expense accounts were frozen.
His company residences and aircraft access were revoked.
A special committee would investigate every transaction he approved during the previous three years.
Carter turned toward Charles.
“You are allowing this?”
Charles sat several chairs away.
“I voted for it.”
“You struck me in front of the entire industry.”
“I should have stopped you long before last night.”
Carter laughed bitterly.
“So now you choose her?”
Charles looked at Serena.
“This was never supposed to be a choice between you.”
“You gave her everything.”
“No. Elaine did.”
Carter faced Serena again.
“You cannot operate this company.”
Serena opened a folder.
Inside were restructuring plans she had quietly developed with Thomas and the independent directors.
Canceling the Argent House acquisition preserved more than three billion dollars in future liabilities.
Freezing the shell-company contracts stopped additional losses.
The recalled reserve would return after independent controls were established.
Serena had no intention of destroying the company.
She had used the withdrawal to force accountability.
Thomas explained the plan.
Employee salaries would continue.
Vendors would be paid.
No essential operation would close.
Only executive discretionary spending and the fraudulent transaction remained frozen.
Carter stared at Serena.
“You planned all of this.”
“For weeks.”
“While living in my house.”
“The house belongs to my trust.”
His face tightened.
“You let me believe I was winning.”
“I gave you opportunities to stop.”
“When?”
“Every time I asked you to send me the authorization. Every time I questioned the merger. Every time I asked you not to bring Vivien into our home.”
Carter had no answer.
The board voted again.
Carter was formally removed.
Serena was appointed interim executive chair, subject to a six-month review.
Charles resigned from operational leadership.
After the meeting, Carter followed Serena into the hallway.
“I made mistakes.”
“You made plans.”
“We can repair the marriage.”
“You announced its end last night.”
“I was angry.”
“You prepared the speech weeks ago.”
Carter reached for her hand.
Serena stepped back.
“The company may recover from what you did.”
Her voice remained calm.

“Our marriage will not.”
