Chapter 1 - Check the Trust

“You idiot—your wife withdrew two billion!”
Charles’s palm struck Carter’s face so hard that the sound cracked through the ballroom like a gunshot.
Hundreds of guests froze beneath the enormous crystal chandeliers.
Carter staggered sideways, one hand flying to his cheek. His midnight-blue suit twisted at the shoulder as he stared at his father in disbelief.
On the marble floor nearby, Vivien had dropped to her knees.
Her silver sequined gown pooled around her. Both hands covered her mouth, but they could not hide the terror in her eyes.
At the center of the ballroom, Serena remained perfectly still.
Her ice-blue gown shimmered beneath the lights. Her expression was so calm that it frightened Carter more than Charles’s slap.
Minutes earlier, Carter had entered the gala with Vivien on his arm.
He had introduced his mistress to investors as “the woman who truly understood the future of the family company.”
Then he had ordered Serena to leave the head table.
He expected tears.
Instead, Serena had touched her phone once.
Now the screen beside her hip displayed two confirmations.
CAPITAL WITHDRAWAL COMPLETED: $2,000,000,000.
AUTHORIZED SIGNATORY ACCESS SUSPENDED.
Serena slowly turned toward Carter.
“I only took back what was mine.”
Carter lowered his hand from his burning cheek.
“What did you do?”
The ballroom doors opened again.
The company’s chief financial officer hurried inside with two attorneys and three board members behind him.
Charles pointed furiously at Carter.
“The board authorized her.”
Serena lifted her phone.
An email from the legal department remained open beneath the transfer confirmation.
Vivien saw it first.
Her face turned white.
Carter snatched Charles’s phone and read the document displayed on the screen.
His anger disappeared.
For the first time that evening, he looked genuinely afraid.
Serena met his eyes.
“Check the trust.”
Carter scrolled through the pages.
Then he reached the final clause.
His lips parted, but no sound came out.
The empire he had spent his entire life believing he would inherit had never truly belonged to his family.

And the woman he had just humiliated in front of everyone controlled far more than two billion dollars.
👉 To understand why Serena could dismantle Carter’s future with one command, everyone in that ballroom would have to learn whose money had actually built the empire.
