Chapter 13 - The Slap Beneath the Chandelier

Charles disappeared into the hallway to answer the CFO’s emergency call.

Carter remained onstage, confused by the sudden movement among the executives.

Vivien whispered, “Keep speaking.”

He forced a smile.

“As I was saying, tonight also marks an important acquisition—”

The ballroom doors burst open.

Charles strode back inside gripping his phone.

His face was dark with fury.

Guests moved aside as he crossed the floor.

Carter lowered the microphone.

“Dad?”

Charles climbed the stage steps.

Then he saw the transfer confirmation.

He saw the frozen accounts.

He saw the board resolution suspending Carter’s authority.

Charles’s hand moved before anyone could stop him.

The slap sent Carter staggering off the stage.

“You idiot—your wife withdrew two billion!”

Vivien collapsed to her knees.

The ballroom fell silent.

Serena stood in the center beneath the chandelier.

She did not turn immediately.

For seven years, Carter had mistaken her restraint for weakness.

For six weeks, he had paraded Vivien through Serena’s home.

For five minutes, he had publicly rewritten their marriage to make himself look merciful.

Now the truth had interrupted him.

Carter held his cheek.

“What are you talking about?”

Serena slowly faced him.

“I only took back what was mine.”

“What did you do?”

“The board authorized her,” Charles shouted.

Thomas entered with the attorneys and independent directors.

Carter looked from his father to Serena.

“You cannot withdraw company funds.”

“They were never company funds,” Serena said.

She lowered her phone beside her gown.

The screen displayed the transfer and access freeze.

Vivien saw the legal email.

She stopped pretending to cry.

Carter grabbed Charles’s phone.

His eyes moved across the trust summary.

ELAINE LEGACY TRUST.

CONTROLLING BENEFICIARY: SERENA.

PROTECTED RESERVE: $2,000,000,000.

EMERGENCY VOTING RIGHTS ACTIVATED.

Carter scrolled faster.

Then he found the ownership schedule.

His face emptied.

Serena’s trust controlled forty-eight percent of the company.

The independent employee trust controlled nine percent.

Charles personally controlled seventeen.

Carter owned less than four.

The empire he expected to inherit could not be transferred to him without Serena’s approval.

She looked directly at him.

“Check the trust.”

Carter reached the next page.

A clause stated that any family beneficiary who forged trust authorization would permanently lose access to discretionary shares.

His future inheritance had just been suspended.

👉 Carter finally understood that the wife he had publicly discarded was the only person who could have given him the empire—and his own forgery had made that impossible.
