Chapter 6 - The Night Before the Driveway
The evening before the video, Lily overheard Meredith and Claire arguing in the kitchen.
Claire wanted to cancel the agency contract.
“This is getting out of control.”
Meredith slammed a folder onto the counter.
“You signed the advance agreement.”
“You told me Nathan’s approval wasn’t required.”
“It won’t be after the custody hearing.”
“What if Lily tells the therapist?”
“Then stop letting her talk to strangers alone.”
Claire lowered her voice.
“She’s scared of us.”
“She’s a child. Children are scared when adults set rules.”
Claire began crying.
Meredith did not comfort her.
She reminded Claire that the hidden income had never been reported.
She said investigators would accuse Claire of stealing from Lily.
“You’ll lose custody. Nathan will take her. And you’ll be the mother who sold her daughter online.”
Claire covered her face.
“What am I supposed to do?”
“Finish the video.”
Lily listened from the hallway.
She returned to her bedroom and opened the doorbell-camera application on an old tablet.
Nathan had shown her only one feature.
A red button labeled CALL DAD.
She pressed it.
The call failed because the aircraft had not yet joined the secure network.
But the camera sent Nathan an emergency notification.
Lily recorded a short message.
“Daddy, Grandma wants me to say you don’t come.”
Then the bedroom door opened.
Claire stood there.
“What are you doing?”
Lily hid the tablet beneath her blanket.
Claire found it.
For one second, relief crossed her face.
She could have used that moment to stop everything.
Then Meredith appeared behind her.
“She contacted him?”
Claire nodded.
Meredith took the tablet.
“She needs to learn that calling him does not change the rules.”
The next morning, Meredith filled a red bucket with cold water.
She told Lily they were filming a “winter bravery challenge.”
Lily refused to go outside barefoot.
Claire held up the phone.
“Just do it quickly.”
“No.”
Meredith grabbed the child’s slippers.
“You want your father? Call him.”
Lily backed toward the living room.
Claire’s three sisters arrived carrying beer and laughing.
They believed they were filming another exaggerated family prank.
None asked why Lily was shaking before the camera even started.
Meredith opened the front door.
The freezing air entered the house.
“Outside.”
Lily looked toward her mother.
