Chapter 2 - Before the Cameras Took Over

Three years earlier, Lily had been a happy child who believed both of her parents could solve anything.

Nathan served as an Air Force logistics officer.

His work required travel, but he arranged his schedule around Lily whenever possible.

Claire had once admired that commitment.

She worked from home managing social media accounts for small businesses.

After Nathan’s assignments became more frequent, Claire began feeling invisible.

Every family gathering centered on Nathan’s service.

Neighbors thanked him.

Teachers praised him.

Lily counted the days until he returned.

Claire began posting short family videos online.

At first, they were harmless.

Lily baking cupcakes.

Nathan surprising her after a trip.

Meredith dancing badly in the kitchen.

One video reached a million views.

Brands began offering money.

Meredith immediately saw an opportunity.

“You could make this your career,” she told Claire.

Claire created a page called Life With Lily.

Nathan supported it only under strict conditions.

No private moments.

No filming Lily while she cried.

No posting her school, medical information, or location.

Most importantly, Lily could always say no.

Claire agreed.

For several months, she followed the rules.

Then views began falling.

Meredith said ordinary happiness was boring.

“People want emotion.”

Claire started filming pranks.

She replaced Lily’s lunch with an empty box and recorded her reaction.

She pretended to give away Lily’s puppy.

She told the child Nathan had missed another birthday, then filmed the reunion as a surprise.

Each video ended with Claire laughing and telling viewers Lily was “dramatic.”

Nathan demanded that the page be closed.

Claire accused him of controlling her income.

“It pays for Lily’s future.”

“It pays because people are watching our daughter suffer.”

The argument ended their marriage.

Claire filed for separation and moved into the house Meredith had inherited from an aunt.

Nathan requested shared custody.

Meredith told Claire he wanted to take Lily away permanently.

That was not true.

But fear made Claire easier to control.

During the custody negotiations, Nathan secured a court order prohibiting either parent from posting Lily online without written agreement.

Claire signed.

Then she created a private account under Meredith’s name.

The videos continued.

Lily learned that saying no did not stop the camera.
