Chapter 4 - The Father They Tried to Erase

Meredith began documenting every day Nathan was away.

She photographed empty chairs at school events scheduled during his missions.

She recorded Lily asking when he would return.

She saved missed calls without mentioning that Claire had changed the times.

Then she created a file labeled ABANDONMENT.

Claire told herself it was only protection in case Nathan tried to take Lily.

But the file contained lies.

One document claimed Nathan had not contacted Lily for forty-three days.

Phone records showed he called almost every night.

Another said he refused to provide financial support.

Bank statements showed automatic payments arriving every month.

Meredith hired a custody consultant known for aggressive family cases.

The consultant advised Claire to create a pattern of Lily “seeking comfort from maternal relatives while the father remained unavailable.”

That was when the camera became constant.

Claire recorded Lily crying after missed calls.

Meredith scheduled calls while Nathan was in secure briefings, knowing he could not answer.

Then she told Lily, “Your daddy chose not to pick up.”

Lily stopped believing her.

During one visit with Nathan, she whispered, “Grandma makes Mommy turn off your calls.”

Nathan asked her to repeat it to Rebecca.

Lily became terrified.

“Mommy says she’ll go to jail if I tell.”

Nathan did not pressure her.

He documented the statement and asked the court for a child therapist.

Meredith opposed it.

She claimed therapy would confuse Lily.

The judge approved an independent counselor anyway.

During the first appointment, Lily drew a house with cameras in every room.

She drew Nathan outside an airplane.

She drew herself behind a locked door.

The counselor asked why.

“Grandma says Daddy can’t hear me when he flies.”

The report alarmed Rebecca.

She requested access to all monetized videos.

Meredith learned about the request before the next hearing.

Someone inside the family court’s clerical office had warned her.

She began deleting files.

But she could not delete the doorbell-camera footage because Nathan had installed the system before the separation and remained a security administrator.

Meredith demanded that Claire replace it.

Claire delayed.

Nathan had told Lily the camera button could contact him during an emergency.

Lily trusted that small blinking light more than any adult inside the house.

The week Nathan left for the training mission, Meredith prepared one final video.

Lily would say her father never came when she needed him.

The clip would support Claire’s emergency custody petition.

Lily refused.

👉 Meredith could manufacture documents and missed calls—but she could not force Lily to say her father had abandoned her without showing exactly how cruel she had become.
