Chapter 8 - THE RECORDING THAT SKIPPED

Paramedics treated Linda beside the market’s first-aid station.

Toby refused to release her hand.

“You believed me, right?” he asked.

“I always believe you.”

His lower lip trembled.

“No one else did.”

Linda pulled him against her.

Desmond stood several feet away, unable to approach.

The sentence cut deeper than any accusation.

He had seen Toby’s dirt before he saw his fear.

Just as he had once seen Linda’s position before he considered her evidence.

Detective Vance placed Desmond’s car under police control.

A technician photographed the severed brake line.

The cut was smooth and recent.

Someone had also loosened a secondary safety connection, ensuring the brakes would fail completely after several miles.

The West River curve was nine miles from the market.

Desmond would have reached it shortly after leaving.

Prescott examined the folded note found near Linda.

It contained Desmond’s license plate and a handwritten threat.

“You ruined my life. Now I’ll ruin yours.”

Linda shook her head.

“I didn’t write that.”

“The handwriting resembles yours.”

“Celeste had access to my personnel files.”

She had written hundreds of internal reports during nine years at Hale Development.

Forging a short sentence would have been easy.

Toby handed his cracked phone to Detective Vance.

The audio contained gaps because the device’s microphone had been damaged.

Celeste’s name was never spoken clearly.

Her voice was recognizable to Desmond, but defense attorneys could challenge identification.

The recording mentioned brake failure, the curve, and Linda.

It proved Toby had heard a conspiracy.

It did not yet prove who had issued every order.

“Did your phone upload the recording anywhere?” Prescott asked.

Toby shrugged.

“It connects to the market Wi-Fi sometimes.”

Prescott looked toward the nearby café.

Its public network automatically synchronized many old devices.

The complete file might have backed up before the phone was damaged.

A digital technician began searching.

Meanwhile, police reviewed market cameras.

Several had been disabled that morning.

The same administrator account had shut them down.

Owen Rusk’s account.

Desmond called Owen.

The number was disconnected.

Celeste’s phone was also off.

Detective Vance issued alerts for both suspects.

Linda was taken to the hospital with a concussion and bruised ribs.

Before the ambulance doors closed, Desmond stepped forward.

“Linda.”

She looked at him.

“I was wrong about you.”

“That nearly killed all three of us.”

“I know.”

“No,” she said. “You’re beginning to know.”

The doors closed between them.

Desmond remained in the parking lot beside the car his wife had turned into a weapon.

Then Prescott received a call from the digital technician.

The market café had captured an automatic backup.

The file was longer than the version on Toby’s phone.

Much longer.

And near the end, Celeste mentioned a locked account Desmond did not know existed.
