Chapter 7 - THE WARNING

Toby ran toward Desmond.

“Don’t start the car!”

A market security guard caught him around the waist.

“Let me go!”

Desmond turned.

Celeste reached him first.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “That child’s mother caused a disturbance.”

Toby kicked against the guard’s legs.

“She put my mom in the trash!”

Celeste lowered her voice.

“He has behavioral problems. Linda often leaves him unattended.”

Desmond looked at Toby’s filthy face and torn clothes.

For one shameful second, he believed his wife.

“Toby,” he said carefully, “where is your mother?”

“In the green dumpster!”

Several shoppers laughed.

Toby’s eyes filled with tears.

“She heard them cut your brakes.”

Celeste touched Desmond’s arm.

“We should go inside. The announcement is already late.”

Toby saw the keys in Desmond’s hand.

He screamed louder.

“The curve! She said your brakes would fail at the curve!”

Desmond stopped.

Celeste’s fingers tightened around his sleeve.

A phrase from Prescott’s investigation returned to him.

Owen controls every executive vehicle.

Toby pulled the cracked phone from his pocket.

“I recorded her.”

Celeste lunged toward him.

The guard stepped between them, confused.

Toby pressed play.

Static filled the air.

Then Celeste’s voice came through the damaged speaker.

“…brake line…”

Her face emptied.

Desmond stared at her.

The recording skipped.

“…green commercial bin…”

Toby pointed toward the service lane.

“My mom is still there!”

Officer Daniel Reed was walking through the market on routine patrol.

He heard the shouting and approached.

Celeste immediately raised both hands.

“This child stole a phone and created some kind of edited recording.”

Toby looked at the officer.

“Please.”

It was not the demand of a child seeking attention.

It was the plea of someone who had been ignored too long.

Officer Reed looked toward the green dumpster.

Then at Desmond’s car.

He called for assistance.

Celeste stepped backward.

“You cannot seriously believe this.”

Desmond no longer looked at her.

“Open the dumpster.”

Reed and another officer ran toward the service lane.

The crowd followed.

Toby slipped from the guard’s arms.

He reached the bin first.

“Mom!”

Officer Reed lifted the heavy lid.

Linda stared up at them with bound wrists and terror in her eyes.

The market fell silent.

“That’s my mom!”

Linda looked past her son.

“Your wife cut the brakes.”

Desmond heard shouting from the parking lot.

Detective Vance had arrived and was examining the car.

Prescott pushed through the crowd, holding his phone.

“Do not start that vehicle.”

Celeste turned away.

A vendor’s camera captured her moving between the tents.

Desmond watched the screen.

“She’s here.”

Police ran after her.

But when they reached the next aisle, only her ivory coat remained on the ground.

👉 Celeste escaped the market—but the car, the dumpster, and Toby’s recording had transformed her perfect accident into an attempted murder investigation.
