Chapter 12 - THE LOCKER

The police created a copy of the flash drive.

The original remained inside an evidence vault.

Linda agreed to carry the copy to Central Bus Terminal while officers watched from a distance.

Desmond objected.

“She already survived an abduction.”

Linda looked at him.

“This is not your decision.”

“I’m trying to prevent another mistake.”

“Then start by not treating me as if I cannot make choices.”

He fell silent.

Linda wore a tracking device beneath her coat.

Detective Vance remained in a surveillance van.

Prescott stayed with Toby at the safe apartment.

The terminal was crowded with travelers and rolling suitcases.

Linda approached Locker 218.

Inside was a small black envelope.

She placed the flash drive on the shelf.

Then she opened the envelope.

It contained a photograph of Desmond’s car taken that morning.

Across the bottom were the words:

He still trusts the wrong people.

Linda looked around.

A station employee pushed a cleaning cart past her.

A woman in a red scarf bought coffee.

An elderly man studied the departure board.

No Celeste.

The locker door slammed shut automatically.

A phone began ringing inside the next locker.

Linda opened it.

Celeste’s voice came through the speaker.

“You look healthier than you did in the dumpster.”

“Where are you?”

“Close enough.”

“You threatened my son.”

“You kept files that did not belong to you.”

“They belonged to families you stole from.”

Celeste laughed.

“Those families will sell their stalls the moment someone offers enough money.”

“You never understood the market.”

“I understand that everything has a price.”

“Is that why you tried to kill your husband?”

Celeste’s voice hardened.

“Desmond was going to destroy everything we built.”

“You built nothing. You stole it.”

A man moved behind Linda.

She saw his reflection in the metal locker.

Owen.

He reached inside his coat.

Linda dropped to the floor.

Detective Vance’s officers moved in.

Owen ran.

He pushed through the terminal crowd and escaped onto a bus platform.

Desmond, who had ignored instructions to remain away, saw him from the opposite entrance.

Owen jumped into a moving shuttle.

Desmond memorized the vehicle number and called it to Vance.

Police stopped the shuttle three blocks away.

Owen was arrested carrying a knife, two burner phones, and an access card for Cresswell Urban Partners.

Celeste was not with him.

During interrogation, Owen refused to speak until investigators showed him the restored audio.

His own voice placed him beneath the trailer and beside Desmond’s car.

His expression changed.

“Celeste said the phone was destroyed.”

“She was wrong,” Vance replied.

Owen asked for a deal.

He claimed Celeste planned the murder, ordered Linda’s abduction, and controlled the stolen accounts.

Then he revealed the location of a hidden office beneath a Cresswell warehouse.

“She keeps backups of everything,” he said. “Including what she did to Desmond’s first wife.”

Desmond stared at him.

“My first wife died twelve years ago.”

Owen looked away.

“Celeste knew her before you did.”
