Chapter 16 - THE FILES UNDER CELESTE’S NAME
Celeste refused to cooperate.
She claimed Owen acted independently.
She claimed Linda created the financial scheme and tried to blackmail her.
She claimed the recording had been edited.
Then investigators opened the flash drive Celeste took from the yellow stall.
It was only a police copy.
The real ledger remained secure.
But Celeste had plugged the copy into her laptop before entering the market.
That action linked her device directly to the stolen accounts.
Her laptop contained password vaults, transaction approvals, and messages to Cresswell executives.
The evidence was devastating.
Linda’s original ledger showed how the money disappeared.
Celeste’s computer showed where it went.
More than twenty-one million dollars had been stolen.
Four million came from the market renewal fund.
Six million came from affordable-housing projects.
The rest came from Hale Development accounts hidden through false consulting contracts.
Cresswell planned to purchase the market after Desmond’s staged death.
Celeste would gain temporary company control, approve the sale, and move the stolen funds overseas.
The forged threat in Linda’s handwriting would make the former employee appear responsible for sabotaging Desmond’s vehicle.
Owen had placed Linda’s old employee badge beneath the driver’s seat.
If Desmond died, police would find it during the investigation.
Detective Vance showed Linda the evidence.
“They intended to charge you with murder.”
Linda looked toward Toby, who was drawing at a nearby table.
“And him?”
Vance hesitated.
The restored final audio answered that question.
Owen had asked what to do with Toby after Linda was placed in the dumpster.
Celeste replied:
Leave him wandering through the market. By the time they find Desmond’s car, everyone will remember the filthy boy making threats.
She planned to turn Toby into a witness against his own mother.
His frightened warnings would be described as things Linda had taught him to say.
If Linda remained missing, suspicion would follow her.
If she was found dead, the public would believe she killed Desmond and fled before meeting some unknown fate.
Toby’s dirt was not an accident.
Celeste had chosen the dumpster because she knew the boy would crawl through filth trying to reach his mother.
She understood exactly how people would judge him.
Linda listened without speaking.
Then she walked into the next room and held Toby until her arms ached.
Hale Development issued a complete public exoneration.
The company admitted Linda had reported the fraud before anyone else.
Desmond held a press conference outside Fairbridge Market.
He did not call himself another victim.
He accepted responsibility.
“I was given the truth by an employee whose evidence I refused to examine,” he said. “My failure allowed her reputation to be destroyed and placed her child in danger.”
A reporter asked whether Linda would return to work for him.
“That decision belongs entirely to her.”
For the first time, Desmond publicly surrendered control of the narrative.
But Celeste’s oldest files still contained unanswered questions about Rachel’s death.
