Chapter 1 - THE BOY BESIDE THE DUMPSTER

The police officer threw open the lid of the green dumpster.

A woman screamed from inside.

Linda Carter was curled beneath torn cardboard and leaking garbage bags. Her wrists were bound behind her back. Dirt covered her clothes, and a bruise was already darkening along her cheek.

“That’s my mom!”

Eight-year-old Toby pushed through the crowd, clutching a worn brown teddy bear against his chest.

His blond hair was matted with mud. One sneaker was missing. His knees were bleeding beneath his torn jeans.

For nearly an hour, vendors and shoppers had called him a liar.

Some said he was begging for attention.

Others accused him of trying to steal from cars.

Now the entire outdoor market went silent.

Linda lifted her head from the dumpster.

Her frightened eyes moved past Toby and locked onto Desmond Hale.

The wealthy businessman stood several feet away in a gray suit, frozen beside the black luxury car he had been preparing to drive.

“Your wife cut the brakes,” Linda gasped.

Desmond’s face changed.

“What?”

Toby ran to his mother but stopped when an officer warned him that the dumpster might contain dangerous objects.

He pointed toward the parking lot.

“I told everyone! The bad lady said his car would fail at the curve.”

A few people lowered their phones in shame.

Toby pulled an old cracked phone from his pocket.

A damaged recording played through the speaker.

A woman’s voice whispered through static.

“Brake failure…”

Then another phrase.

“…the curve…”

Beside the dumpster, an officer found the plastic ties used on Linda’s wrists and a folded note containing Desmond’s license plate number.

His exact plate.

Desmond stared at the note.

“Celeste planned this?”

At the far end of the market, Detective Mara Vance crouched beside Desmond’s car. Her flashlight moved beneath the chassis.

She stood immediately.

“Do not start that vehicle.”

Desmond’s attorney, Arthur Prescott, received Toby’s audio file on his phone.

As he listened, his expression hardened.

The brake line had been cut cleanly.

Not damaged.

Cut.

Officers lifted Linda from the dumpster.

Toby broke free and threw his arms around her waist.

“I knew you were in there.”

Linda collapsed against him.

Desmond looked across the crowd.

A woman in an ivory coat was moving quickly between the colored tents.

A vendor’s phone camera captured her face as she turned.

Celeste Hale.

Desmond’s wife.

“She’s here,” he whispered.

Police turned toward the tents.

Celeste disappeared into the crowd.

But the recording on Toby’s phone contained more than a plan to destroy Desmond’s brakes.

It contained a sentence about Linda.

And what Celeste intended to do with Toby after the crash.
