Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN NO ONE BELIEVED

Three weeks earlier, Linda Carter had stood outside Desmond Hale’s office holding a folder that could have protected hundreds of families.
Security refused to let her enter.
“I worked here for nine years,” she told the receptionist.
“You no longer work here,” the woman replied.
“I need five minutes with Mr. Hale.”
“Mrs. Hale has already reviewed your allegations.”
“That’s the problem.”
The receptionist looked away.
Linda had once been a senior compliance analyst at Hale Development, the company that owned several shopping centers, apartment buildings, and the land beneath Fairbridge Market.
She was never wealthy.
But the job gave her enough to rent a small house and support Toby after his father died from a heart condition.
Linda had been proud of her work.
Then she discovered irregular payments inside the Fairbridge Community Renewal Fund.
The fund had been created to repair vendor stalls, provide emergency grants, and prevent local families from being displaced during a proposed redevelopment.
More than four million dollars had vanished.
Invoices were issued to consulting companies that had no employees.
Several were connected to Celeste’s personal assistant.
Linda reported the transactions.
Two days later, Desmond summoned her to his office.
Celeste was already there.
She placed printed emails on the desk.
The messages appeared to show Linda demanding money to remain silent.
Linda stared at them.
“I didn’t write these.”
Celeste gave her a disappointed smile.
“You sent them from your account.”
“My account was accessed while I was on medical leave.”
Desmond did not ask anyone to investigate.
He had been married to Celeste for five years.
She was polished, charitable, and admired by the same investors he needed for an upcoming expansion.
Linda was only an employee standing before him in an old coat.
“You are terminated,” Desmond said.
“Sir, someone is stealing from the market fund.”
“My wife has explained the situation.”
“Your wife is the situation.”
His expression turned cold.
“Leave before security removes you.”
Linda left with her dignity barely intact.
Within days, rumors spread that she had stolen from the fund herself.
No other company would hire her.
She began repairing old stuffed animals and selling them from a small booth at Fairbridge Market.
Toby sat beside her after school, doing homework beneath a yellow tent.
People who once respected Linda now whispered when she walked past.
Still, she kept copies of the real financial records hidden inside a battered recipe box at home.
She told Toby the truth mattered even when powerful people buried it.
Then one rainy afternoon, Arthur Prescott appeared at her booth.
Desmond Hale’s longtime attorney placed a business card beside a repaired teddy bear.
“I believe you were framed,” he said.
Linda stared at him.
“Does Desmond believe that?”
“Not yet.”
“Then why are you here?”
“Because the money is still disappearing.”
