Chapter 6 - The Photograph from St. Matthew’s

Mia took the phone from my hand.

She enlarged the photograph.

I was forty-eight in the image, still wearing my dark hospital suit and identification badge. Walter stood beside me holding a sealed evidence box. Behind us, reporters crowded the courthouse steps.

“What was St. Matthew’s?” Mia asked.

“A hospital fraud case.”

Caleb leaned against the crib.

“That’s the public version.”

I ignored him.

“Walter represented the network during an investigation into illegal patient transfers.”

“What kind of transfers?”

“Psychiatric patients were being moved to unlicensed facilities.”

Hannah looked toward the hallway where the Northway workers had stood minutes earlier.

“Northway?”

“An earlier company with a different name.”

Caleb smiled.

“There it is.”

Mia’s face went pale.

“You knew about them?”

“I helped shut them down.”

“Then how are they outside my house?”

“I don’t know.”

Caleb gave a low laugh.

“She knows more than she’s telling you.”

I moved toward him.

“Say exactly what you think you know.”

He looked at Mia, not me.

“Your mother protected the hospital.”

“That’s a lie.”

“Walter buried evidence. Eleanor signed the settlement. Patients disappeared into private facilities, and the network paid families to stay quiet.”

The accusation struck because parts of it were true.

I had signed a settlement.

I had believed it would fund treatment for harmed patients and force the company to surrender its licenses. Six months later, three witnesses withdrew their testimony. Walter told me they had accepted private agreements.

I had not known the agreements came from him.

At least, that was what I had told myself.

Mia studied my face.

“Did patients disappear?”

“Two could not be located after the investigation.”

“And you never told me?”

“You were sixteen.”

“I’m twenty-nine now.”

Caleb stepped between us emotionally without moving an inch.

“Ask her why Walter still calls her Eleanor instead of Mrs. Bennett.”

“Because we worked together.”

“Ask her why he used her signature.”

“I don’t know.”

“Ask her why he knew she was here tonight.”

That question had no safe answer.

I had told no one I was staying with Mia.

I had arrived late after she stopped responding to my messages. Caleb claimed she was sleeping. I went to the guest room, uneasy but exhausted.

The only person who knew I had changed my flight was my assistant, Nora.

And Walter had once supervised Nora during the St. Matthew’s litigation.

Hannah stepped closer.

“We need to leave before whoever sent that message arrives.”

She was right.

The house had become a controlled scene. Caleb’s transport team had failed. The forged petition had been discovered. Walter would not wait.

I put the custody papers into my robe pocket.

Caleb blocked the doorway.

“You’re not taking those.”

“They contain my forged signature.”

“They’re part of an active legal file.”

“They were hidden under a crib.”

“Because Mia searches everything.”

Mia flinched.

Caleb saw it and softened his voice.

“Baby, tell them about the kitchen knives.”

She stared at him.

“What about them?”

“You hid them.”

“No. You locked them away.”

“Because you said you were afraid of what you might do.”

“I said I was afraid of what you would do.”

Caleb looked at Hannah as though Mia had proven his case.

The precision of his manipulation sickened me.

Hannah kept her attention on Mia.

“Do you feel like hurting yourself or Noah?”

“No.”

“Have you ever?”

“No.”

“Do you feel safe with Caleb?”

Mia looked at him.

“No.”

That answer changed the balance in the room.

Caleb’s face emptied.

I stepped toward the door.

“We’re leaving.”

He did not move.

Then the downstairs security alarm beeped once.

Someone had entered a code.

Caleb looked surprised.

Not frightened.

Surprised.

A woman’s heels clicked across the marble foyer.

Hannah lowered her voice.

“Who else has a key?”

Caleb looked at me.

“Apparently, your friends do.”

Walter Voss appeared at the nursery doorway in a charcoal overcoat.

Beside him stood my assistant, Nora Lane.

Nora carried my office laptop.
