Chapter 12 - The Moving Signal Marked D.B. II

I grabbed the laptop before Walter could.

The map showed a vehicle traveling east toward the industrial district.

Nora’s message remained on the screen.

TRANSFER SUBJECT BEFORE ELEANOR REACHES HIM.

“Who is transporting my son?” I asked.

Walter wiped blood from his lip.

“You don’t understand his condition.”

“What condition?”

“Daniel suffered severe neurological injury.”

“Where has he been?”

Vivian answered from the speaker.

“In protected care.”

“Protected from whom?”

“From you.”

The cruelty of the answer made my vision narrow.

I had spent seventeen years believing my son died alone in a burning car. I had stood beside a closed casket because officials said the remains were too damaged for viewing.

Daniel had held me upright at the funeral.

Walter had managed the legal details.

Vivian had disappeared eight years later.

All of them had known.

Mia stood beside me, still pale from the paternity report.

“Why does Noah match Danny?”

Walter looked at the floor.

Hannah read the rest of the page.

“The probability is not listed as parent-child.”

She turned the document.

“It says first-degree familial relationship.”

Mia exhaled shakily.

“So he could be my uncle.”

“Yes,” Hannah said. “The file has been mislabeled.”

Caleb heard it.

His expression shifted from rage to humiliation.

“They made me think she cheated.”

“They needed you angry,” I said.

Vivian had released the paternity claim at the exact moment we tried to leave. She knew Caleb’s jealousy would stop Mia.

Every revelation was a lever.

Graham forced Caleb onto the rug and held him there.

Walter reached for the laptop.

I pulled it away.

“If you want this device, you’ll explain where Danny is.”

“He is not the boy you remember.”

“He is my son.”

“He became dangerous.”

That word again.

Unstable.

Aggressive.

Dangerous.

The language used to justify removal.

“Did he become dangerous,” I asked, “or did you need people to believe he was?”

Walter’s face tightened.

Hannah moved closer to the screen.

“The vehicle is approaching Northway’s old facility.”

I knew the building.

A converted rehabilitation center near the river, officially closed after the St. Matthew’s scandal.

The same place missing patients might have been sent.

Nora’s brother.

Danny.

Perhaps others.

Mia shifted Noah into one arm.

“I’m going with you.”

“No.”

“Mom, he’s my uncle.”

“You just gave birth.”

“And Caleb tried to have me committed. Staying here is not safer.”

She was right.

Hannah took out her car keys.

“I’ll drive.”

Walter laughed softly.

“You won’t get past the gate.”

Caleb twisted beneath Graham’s grip.

“I can.”

Everyone looked at him.

He stared at Walter.

“You gave me access credentials.”

Walter’s expression darkened.

“They’ve been revoked.”

“Not the maintenance code.”

Vivian’s voice cut in.

“Caleb, do not assist them.”

He looked toward the mirror.

“You used me.”

“You were compensated.”

“You told me Noah would secure my future.”

“You failed to secure Mia.”

Something in him broke.

Not remorse.

Pride.

Caleb shoved backward, striking Graham’s chin with his head. The guard loosened his grip. Caleb rolled free and grabbed Walter’s dropped folder.

Inside was a black access card.

He threw it to me.

“Northway’s lower entrance,” he said. “Code 6119.”

Mia stared at him.

“Why help us?”

His face twisted.

“I’m not helping you. I’m taking back what they stole.”

He still believed Noah, the trust, and Mia’s life could belong to him.

But for the moment, our enemy’s fracture created an opening.

I took the card.

The laptop map flashed red.

The vehicle carrying Danny stopped.

A second message appeared.

SUBJECT RESISTING. SEDATION AUTHORIZED.

Then the signal vanished.

Hannah looked at me.

“We have to move now.”

Before we reached the hallway, the nursery speaker crackled one final time.

Vivian whispered, “Eleanor, if you enter Northway, you will learn why Daniel begged us to let your son die.”
