Chapter 11 - The Father Named in Noah’s File

Caleb reached Mia before Walter did.

He grabbed her shoulder and pulled her back from the window.

Noah cried in Hannah’s arms outside on the porch roof.

“Who is his father?” Caleb demanded.

Mia stumbled against the crib.

“You are.”

“Vivian said—”

“Vivian has lied about everything.”

Walter entered with Graham behind him.

The broken door hung from one hinge.

“Caleb, step away from her,” Walter ordered.

Caleb did not.

His eyes were wild now, stripped of polish.

“What file?”

Walter’s silence answered too much.

Caleb looked at him.

“You knew?”

“It is irrelevant.”

“It’s my son.”

Vivian’s voice came through the speaker.

“Noah is a Bennett beneficiary. That is what matters.”

Caleb turned toward the mirror.

“A Bennett beneficiary through Mia.”

“No,” Vivian said. “Through his father.”

Mia’s face drained of color.

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?”

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Walter reached for the laptop in Graham’s hands.

“Disconnect the camera.”

Caleb blocked him.

“Show me the file.”

“This is not the time.”

Caleb shoved Walter backward.

Graham stepped forward, but Caleb was younger and stronger. He seized the leather folder from Walter’s arm and tore it open.

Documents spilled across the floor.

One page carried the heading:

NEONATAL PATERNITY CONFIRMATION.

Caleb snatched it.

Mia moved beside him.

The report listed the tested father as DANIEL BENNETT II.

My husband’s name had been Daniel Bennett.

But he had never used “II.”

Our son had.

Daniel Jr., whom we called Danny, died seventeen years earlier at age nineteen.

At least, we had buried what we were told were his remains after a car fire.

Mia stared at the report.

“That’s impossible.”

Caleb looked at her as though she were a stranger.

“You slept with your dead uncle?”

“No!”

The accusation was grotesque, but Vivian had designed the confusion deliberately.

I took the report from Caleb.

The date of sample collection was two weeks before Noah’s birth.

Mia had undergone routine bloodwork then.

A second specimen number belonged to a stored genetic profile.

No living father needed to be present.

“This doesn’t mean Danny is Noah’s father,” I said. “It means someone matched Noah’s DNA against Danny’s stored sample.”

Hannah climbed back through the window with Noah.

“Why would his sample still exist?”

I remembered St. Matthew’s.

After the car fire, Danny’s identity had been confirmed through dental records and a preserved blood specimen from a sports physical.

That specimen had been stored at St. Matthew’s.

The hospital at the center of missing patients, forged transfers, and hidden genetic files.

Nora’s brother had vanished there.

What if Danny had not died in the fire?

My knees weakened.

Walter saw the thought on my face.

“Do not start inventing miracles.”

“You used stored DNA.”

“For estate verification.”

“Where is the source file?”

Vivian answered through the camera.

“Your son survived the accident.”

The room went silent.

I could hear Noah breathing against Hannah’s shoulder.

Mia turned toward the mirror.

“Where is he?”

“Alive.”

My heart stopped and restarted painfully.

Seventeen years of grief pressed against one impossible word.

Alive.

Walter looked furious now.

“You were not supposed to disclose that.”

“You no longer control the scene,” Vivian replied.

Caleb released Mia’s arm.

He looked at Walter, then at the paternity report, then at Vivian’s camera.

“You recruited me to marry her because of the baby?”

“No,” Vivian said. “You were recruited before conception.”

Caleb’s face changed.

He had believed he was part of the design.

Now he realized he had been selected for it.

“What did you do to me?”

Walter stepped toward him.

“Caleb, calm down.”

Caleb struck him once across the mouth.

Graham grabbed Caleb from behind.

They crashed into the rocking chair.

The laptop fell.

The screen opened.

A live map appeared, showing a moving vehicle labeled SUBJECT D.B. II.

The signal was less than five miles away.

Then a message flashed across the screen.

TRANSFER SUBJECT BEFORE ELEANOR REACHES HIM.
