Chapter 15 - The Account Hidden in Mia’s Blood

The locks engaged with a heavy metallic click.
Room 02 became a sealed box.
Mia stood against the wall holding Noah. Hannah stayed beside her. Danny gripped the flash drive around his neck. Daniel faced the door as if calculating which lie might still open it.
I looked at him.
“What does Mia’s blood unlock?”
Daniel did not answer immediately.
That delay was enough to make me hate him again.
“The original trust used biometric verification,” he said. “Daniel Sr. created it after St. Matthew’s.”
“My father-in-law?”
“Yes.”
Daniel’s father had founded Bennett Medical Properties before Daniel expanded it into hospitals, clinics, and rehabilitation centers. After his death, control passed through a structure so complicated that even I had never seen the full ownership map.
“The account holds what?” I asked.
“Not just money.”
Danny removed the flash drive from his neck.
“Names.”
Daniel turned sharply.
“Don’t.”
“Names of judges, physicians, trustees, transport companies, and private facilities,” Danny said. “They were paid through Bennett properties.”
Mia looked at me.
“Our family funded this?”
“Our family hid it,” Daniel said. “There’s a difference.”
“Not to the people locked in these rooms,” Nora whispered.
The loudspeaker clicked.
Walter’s voice returned.
“Daniel, surrender the drive and bring Mia to procedure room four.”
“No.”
The answer came fast.
For the first time, my husband sounded like the man I remembered.
Walter sighed.
“You have thirty seconds before Vivian releases the St. Matthew’s files under Eleanor’s credentials.”
My credentials.
The forged email.
The transfer approvals.
The settlement.
They had spent years building a record that placed me at the center of the operation.
Daniel looked at me.
“I tried to keep you outside this.”
“You used my name to protect yourself.”
“I used your authority because Walter already had access to it.”
“That is not a defense.”
The emergency light shifted from red to amber.
A countdown appeared on the wall monitor.
00:29.
Hannah examined the IV equipment.
“They may pump something through the room ventilation.”
Nora shook her head.
“No gas. They’ll kill power, unlock the medical corridor, and send the extraction team.”
“What do they need from Mia?” I asked.
“Blood sample, retinal scan, voice confirmation.”
“Why her?”
“Daniel Sr. designed the account to pass through the eldest living granddaughter if the direct male heir became incapacitated.”
Danny laughed bitterly.
“So they kept me incapacitated.”
“And married Caleb to Mia,” I said, “so he could control her authorization.”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
He had known that too.
Mia saw it.
“You approved my marriage?”
“No.”
“You let it happen.”
“I believed Caleb was being monitored.”
“By Vivian?”
“Yes.”
“She watched him pull me by my hair.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
“I didn’t know.”
The countdown reached 00:18.
Danny held out the flash drive to me.
“Take it.”
Daniel grabbed his wrist.
“No.”
Danny shoved him away.
“You don’t get to choose anymore.”
Father and son faced each other, both alive, both strangers shaped by the same prison.
I took the drive.
The wall monitor changed.
A folder opened automatically.
BENNETT PRIMARY LEDGER.
Hundreds of names appeared.
Some I recognized from hospital boards.
Some from state agencies.
Some from charitable foundations.
Then I saw mine.
ELEANOR BENNETT — AUTHORIZING EXECUTIVE.
Every illegal transfer carried my digital approval.
Mia stared at the list.
“Mom?”
“They forged it.”
Nora moved closer to the screen.
“Not all of it.”
I turned.
She pointed to one entry dated twelve years earlier.
ST. MATTHEW’S EMERGENCY RELOCATION PROGRAM.
My signature appeared beside Walter’s.
I remembered signing that agreement.
Walter had told me it moved endangered whistleblowers into protective housing.
The account showed something else.
Patients had been transferred into permanent private custody.
My signature had opened the door.
“I didn’t know,” I whispered.
Danny looked at me with exhausted sadness.
“That’s what Dad always says too.”
The countdown reached zero.
The lights went out.
For several seconds, the only sound was Noah breathing against Mia’s chest.
Then emergency lamps came on.
The door opened.
Caleb stood in the corridor with blood on his shirt and a pistol in his hand.
Walter stood behind him.
Vivian appeared on a large mobile screen pushed by an attendant, her older face finally visible.
And beside the screen stood Dr. Mercer, holding a medical case labeled MATERNAL VERIFICATION.
Caleb aimed the gun at Daniel.
“Give me the baby,” he said.
Mia moved behind Hannah.
Walter shook his head.
“Not the child, Caleb.”
Caleb’s eyes flicked toward him.
Walter pointed at me.
“Eleanor has the drive.”
Vivian studied my face through the screen.
Then she smiled.
“At last,” she said, “every surviving Bennett is in the same room.”
The corridor doors sealed behind them.
Dr. Mercer opened the medical case.
Inside were four labeled blood vials.
MIA.
NOAH.
DANNY.
ELEANOR.
The fifth vial was already filled.
The label read DANIEL BENNETT.
But Daniel stood beside me, staring at the blood as though it could not possibly belong to him.
Vivian leaned toward the camera.
“That sample came from the real Daniel Bennett,” she said. “The man beside you is his brother.”
Mia gasped.
I turned toward the husband I had buried, mourned, and just found alive.
His face went completely still.
Then the locked intercom behind us activated.
A different man’s voice spoke from somewhere deeper inside Northway.
My real husband’s voice.

“Eleanor, don’t let them open the account.”
