Chapter 5 - The Envelope Beneath the Crib

Caleb moved before any of us did.

He lunged toward the crib.

Mia threw herself in front of it.

“No.”

He stopped inches from her.

For the first time that night, she did not step back.

Her long hair hung loose around her pale face. Her hands trembled, but she planted both feet against the rug and faced him.

“What did Walter hide?” I asked.

Mia kept her eyes on Caleb.

“An envelope.”

“When?”

“Three nights ago. Caleb thought I was asleep.”

Caleb’s jaw clenched.

“You were hallucinating.”

“I watched Walter kneel beside the crib.”

Hannah handed Noah to me and moved beside Mia.

“What did the envelope look like?”

“White. Thick. Red seal.”

Caleb reached for the crib rail.

Hannah caught his wrist.

“Don’t.”

He looked at her hand until she released him.

Then he stepped back and smoothed his shirt again.

Every time he lost control, he performed respectability.

I crouched beside the crib.

The base was solid white wood, but one support panel sat slightly crooked. I pressed it.

The panel shifted.

Inside the hollow frame was a white envelope sealed in red wax.

Caleb inhaled sharply.

Mia had told the truth.

I pulled it free.

Across the front was written:

IN THE EVENT OF MATERNAL INCAPACITY.

Hannah read the words over my shoulder.

“That’s not a medical form.”

I broke the seal.

Caleb grabbed my forearm.

“No.”

Mia caught his sleeve.

He shoved her aside.

She lost balance and struck the rocking chair, but Hannah caught her before she fell.

I twisted free and opened the envelope.

Inside was a temporary custody petition naming Caleb as Noah’s sole emergency guardian.

Attached were declarations from Dr. Mercer and two witnesses claiming Mia had threatened to harm herself and the baby.

One witness was Caleb.

The other was me.

My signature appeared at the bottom.

I stared at it.

“I never signed this.”

Caleb’s face remained still.

Hannah took the page.

“This notarization is dated yesterday.”

“I was in Boston yesterday,” I said.

Mia looked at Caleb.

“You forged my mother’s name?”

“I didn’t prepare the papers.”

“Walter did.”

Caleb said nothing.

That silence was an answer.

The petition had not yet been filed. A yellow note was attached.

FILE AFTER INCIDENT.

They needed an incident.

The nursery confrontation had not been an accident.

Caleb had denied Mia access to Noah, provoked her, and summoned a private transport company. He wanted her restrained, documented, and removed.

I thought of the words he had spoken while pulling her hair.

A bad wife doesn’t get to comfort her own child.

He had not merely been cruel.

He had been creating a breakdown.

Hannah photographed every page.

Caleb watched her.

“You’re violating attorney-client privilege.”

“The petition names a forged witness.”

“That’s between Walter and Eleanor.”

The room became very still.

My name came out of his mouth with casual certainty.

Eleanor.

Me.

“What did you say?”

Caleb realized his mistake.

“Nothing.”

“You said Walter and Eleanor.”

“I meant you.”

“No, you didn’t.”

Mia stared at me.

“Mom?”

I felt the ground shift beneath everything I thought I understood.

Caleb had received messages from Walter after I started recording. The petition carried my forged signature. And Caleb had just spoken as though Walter and I had a private arrangement.

He smiled slowly.

“You should tell her.”

“Tell her what?”

“That Walter works for you.”

Mia looked from him to me.

“No.”

Caleb’s voice softened.

“Ask your mother who hired Walter Voss twelve years ago.”

I already knew the answer.

I had hired Walter during a hospital acquisition after discovering millions in falsified billing.

He had been my outside counsel.

But I had not spoken to him in seven years.

Caleb stepped closer to Mia.

“Your mother brought Walter into this family long before I ever met you.”

My phone buzzed.

A new message appeared from an unknown number.

ELEANOR, DELETE THE STREAM OR YOUR DAUGHTER LEARNS WHAT HAPPENED AT ST. MATTHEW’S.

Below it was an old photograph of me standing beside Walter outside a courthouse.

Mia saw it.

Her hand fell away from Caleb’s sleeve.
