Chapter 13 - The Lower Entrance at Northway

We left Caleb fighting Graham and Walter in the nursery.
Hannah drove.
Mia sat in the back seat with Noah secured against her chest. I held the laptop open on my knees, refreshing the dead signal every few seconds.
No police.
Not yet.
The nursery video was backed up, but Vivian controlled enough records to turn Mia’s escape into abduction and mine into interference. We needed Danny alive, conscious, and able to identify what had happened.
If he could.
Northway’s abandoned facility stood beside the river behind a rusted chain-link fence.
The upper windows were boarded.
The parking lot appeared empty.
But a camera above the gate followed our car.
I used Caleb’s access card.
The reader flashed red.
“Revoked,” Hannah said.
I entered 6119.
The light changed to green.
Caleb had told the truth.
The gate opened slowly.
We drove around the main building to a concrete ramp descending beneath it. At the bottom stood a steel door with no exterior handle.
The black card worked there.
Inside, fluorescent lights hummed over a corridor that looked recently cleaned.
The facility was not abandoned.
It was hidden.
Closed doors lined both sides. Each had a narrow observation window, a number, and a digital lock.
From somewhere deeper inside came the sound of a man shouting.
“Don’t let them move me!”
My body reacted before my mind did.
Danny had been nineteen when I last heard his voice.
The shout was older, rougher, but something in the shape of it reached straight through seventeen years.
I ran.
Hannah caught my arm.
“Slow down. We don’t know who’s here.”
Mia followed with Noah.
At the first intersection, a wall monitor displayed patient codes.
N.L.-07.
D.B.-02.
R.M.-11.
Danny’s initials.
Room 02.
A woman stepped from an office wearing gray medical scrubs.
Nora.
She froze when she saw me.
“You weren’t supposed to find this place.”
“Where is my son?”
“Eleanor, listen to me.”
I grabbed her shoulders.
“Where is Danny?”
“Room two.”
I released her and ran.
The door required a code.
Nora entered it.
Inside, a man sat strapped to a transport chair.
His hair was dark and streaked with gray. A scar ran from his temple into his hairline. His hands were secured at the wrists, and an IV line hung from his arm.
But his eyes were Daniel’s eyes.
My son’s eyes.
“Danny.”
He looked at me.
For one terrible second, there was no recognition.
Then his face crumpled.
“Mom?”
My knees hit the floor.
I wrapped my arms around him, careful of the straps.
He smelled of antiseptic and fear.
“They told me you stopped looking.”
“I thought you were dead.”
Behind me, Nora began crying.
Danny saw Mia.
His expression changed again.
“Mia?”
She stepped closer.
“You remember me?”
“You were twelve.”
She covered her mouth.
He looked at Noah.
Then at the custody papers sticking from my robe pocket.
“You brought the baby.”
“How do you know about Noah?”
Danny stared at Nora.
“She showed me photographs.”
Nora wiped her face.
“I was trying to keep him oriented.”
“Why did you move him tonight?” I asked.
“Vivian ordered it.”
“Where?”
“Another facility.”
“Why?”
“Because the nursery upload contained his voice.”
I frowned.
“The camera never recorded Danny.”
Nora looked at the laptop.
“Not the visible archive. The hidden audio channel.”
Walter had placed something beneath the crib besides the custody petition.
A listening device connected to Northway.
Danny had been speaking to someone near the nursery.
Impossible, unless the feed ran both ways.
Danny leaned toward me.
“Dad used the system to talk to me.”
I stared at him.
“Your father is dead.”
His expression sharpened.
“No, Mom.”
Mia stopped breathing.
Danny looked toward the corridor.
“He was here three days ago.”
Footsteps sounded beyond the room.
Nora’s face went white.
“That’s impossible. Daniel isn’t scheduled until morning.”
A shadow crossed the observation window.

Then the door lock turned from the outside.
