Chapter 9 - THE APPROVAL THAT NEVER ARRIVED

After Renata froze the bridge financing, panic spread around the table.
One lender closed his folder.
Another began texting his legal team.
Rodrigo reached for Renata’s phone.
She pulled it away.
“Restore the approval.”
“There was no approval to restore.”
“The committee was voting tomorrow.”
“Not anymore.”
Valeria pressed ice from a napkin against her cheek.
“She cannot do this because of a personal argument.”
Daniel Shaw’s voice came through Renata’s speaker.
“The financing was frozen because Grupo Ibarra failed to disclose related-party payments and a contingent asset-sale agreement.”
Every investor heard him.
Valeria’s expression changed.
Rodrigo looked toward the Mercer Ridge executive.
The man stood.
“I believe this meeting is over.”
Renata addressed him.
“Sit down, Mr. Kessler.”
He stopped.
“Your fund’s agreement includes an undisclosed payment to Orion Advisory.”
“That is a standard introduction fee.”
“Orion is owned by Valeria Cruz.”
Heads turned toward her.
Valeria lowered the napkin.
“That information is inaccurate.”
Renata opened the state registration file.
Valeria’s name and address appeared on the screen.
Rodrigo stared at it.
“You told me Orion belonged to outside consultants.”
“It does.”
“You own it.”
“I manage it.”
“You received nine million dollars.”
“For services that kept your company alive.”
Renata looked at Rodrigo.
“Did you authorize a fee from Mercer Ridge too?”
“No.”
Mr. Kessler reached for the contract.
Renata placed her hand over it.
“The trust’s counsel already has a copy.”
Kessler left without another word.
One pension representative turned toward Rodrigo.
“Did you disclose the affair?”
Rodrigo’s face went rigid.
Valeria stood.
“That is irrelevant.”
“Not when the executive’s assistant receives company money while controlling his access and sharing a private suite.”
Rodrigo looked at Renata.
“You sent them the security video?”
“No. I disclosed a conflict relevant to financing.”
Valeria’s voice rose.
“You vindictive—”
Renata stepped closer.
“Finish that sentence carefully.”
Hotel security entered after a guest called from the hallway.
Renata did not ask them to remove Valeria.
She asked them to preserve the penthouse camera footage and secure every contract on the table.
Rodrigo stared at his wife as though seeing her for the first time.
“You planned this.”
“I planned to ask questions.”
“You knew she would lose control.”
“No. You knew, and you still placed her beside you.”
Renata removed her wedding ring.
She set it next to the untouched wineglass.
“Your financing is frozen. Your records are under review. And our marriage is no longer available as collateral.”
She walked out.
Behind her, Daniel called with urgent news.
The trust’s forensic team had found a second company connected to Valeria.
