Chapter 7 - THE CONTRACT BENEATH THE FLOWERS

The investor dinner was supposed to save Grupo Ibarra.

Rodrigo invited private lenders, project partners, and two major pension-fund representatives to the penthouse overlooking Manhattan.

Valeria controlled every detail.

White flowers.

Imported wine.

Personalized folders.

She placed Renata at the far end of the table beside the event coordinator.

Rodrigo’s name card sat at the center.

Valeria’s was immediately to his right.

Renata quietly moved her own card beside her husband’s.

Valeria moved it back.

Neither woman spoke.

An hour before the guests arrived, Renata entered the dining room alone.

A folder had been left beneath the centerpiece.

It contained the contract Rodrigo planned to ask investors to support.

The first pages described temporary bridge financing.

The final pages contained something else.

A proposed asset sale.

If Grupo Ibarra missed its next debt payment, a private fund called Mercer Ridge Capital would receive the right to purchase three infrastructure projects at a steep discount.

Valeria’s Orion Advisory would receive a transaction fee.

Renata photographed every page.

Then she found a handwritten note clipped to the back.

R WILL SIGN AFTER DINNER. KEEP WIFE AWAY FROM FULL COPY.

The handwriting belonged to Valeria.

Rodrigo entered as Renata returned the contract to the folder.

“What are you doing?”

“Reading.”

“That version is not final.”

“Does the trust committee know about Mercer Ridge?”

He froze.

“It is only a contingency.”

“It allows them to take the company’s best assets.”

“If the bridge closes, the clause never activates.”

“And if the trust refuses financing?”

Rodrigo looked toward the skyline.

“We don’t have another option.”

“Who introduced Mercer Ridge?”

“Valeria.”

Renata nodded slowly.

Of course.

Valeria entered carrying name cards.

She saw the contract in Renata’s hands.

“That document is confidential.”

“So is theft.”

Valeria smiled.

“You enjoy that word.”

“I use it when money is taken through deception.”

Rodrigo stepped closer.

“Not tonight.”

Renata handed him the folder.

“You planned to sign this without disclosing it to the trust.”

“I planned to protect the company.”

“You planned to use my family’s financing to prevent an asset sale you secretly authorized.”

Valeria placed Renata’s name card back near the kitchen.

“You are here as Rodrigo’s wife, not as a lender.”

Renata looked at the card.

“That distinction may become expensive.”

The first guests arrived before Rodrigo could answer.

Renata took her seat quietly.

Across the room, Daniel Shaw confirmed by message that the trust’s monitoring team was ready.

Then Renata noticed Valeria whispering to a Mercer Ridge executive near the windows.

The man slipped a small envelope into Valeria’s clutch.

👉 The dinner was not only designed to secure financing—Valeria was being paid by the company waiting to profit if the financing failed.
