Chapter 1 - THE SECOND SLAP

The second slap was louder than the first.

Valeria Cruz fell sideways against a dining chair, one hand flying to her cheek.

Around the penthouse table, twelve investors stopped breathing.

Seconds earlier, Valeria had struck Renata Ibarra across the face after telling her she belonged with the staff.

Now Renata stood beneath the crystal chandelier in a champagne-colored gown, her own cheek burning red.

She did not cry.

She did not apologize.

And she did not look at Valeria.

She looked at her husband.

Rodrigo Ibarra stood behind his assistant in a navy suit, one hand still raised too late to stop either woman.

“Renata,” he whispered.

There was fear in his voice.

Not concern for his wife.

Fear of what she might do next.

Valeria straightened her red dress.

“You just assaulted me.”

“You struck me first,” Renata replied calmly.

“You interrupted a private investment dinner.”

“I’m Rodrigo’s wife.”

Valeria laughed.

“That doesn’t give you a seat at this table.”

Rodrigo’s face tightened.

“Valeria, stop.”

But Valeria had mistaken his warning for protection.

She pointed toward the smaller table near the kitchen doors.

“You belong at the staff table.”

Renata slowly lowered her hand.

“Ask that again after I introduce myself.”

She opened the clutch resting beside her untouched wineglass and removed her phone.

An email glowed across the screen.

SALCEDO TRUST COMMITTEE

BRIDGE FINANCING APPROVAL PENDING CHAIR CONFIRMATION

Beneath it was Grupo Ibarra’s emergency financing agreement.

The company needed forty-eight million dollars before midnight Friday.

Without it, the banks could seize three major projects and force Rodrigo’s empire into default.

Rodrigo saw the email.

His face turned white.

“Renata, don’t.”

She sent one message.

Across the city, senior trust counsel Daniel Shaw opened Grupo Ibarra’s file.

Debt exposure filled his screen.

So did Rodrigo’s name.

Renata’s instruction contained only three words.

FREEZE THE APPROVAL.

Daniel picked up the phone.

“Stop every transfer,” he told the committee secretary.

Back inside the penthouse, Rodrigo stepped toward Renata.

“What did you do?”

Renata placed the phone in the center of the table.

The investors leaned closer.

They read her name beneath the email signature.

RENATA SALCEDO IBARRA

CHAIR, SALCEDO TRUST COMMITTEE

Valeria’s confidence vanished.

Renata looked directly at her.

“Now you know who funds him.”

Then one investor noticed something else on the screen.

An attachment labeled ORION ADVISORY—UNAUTHORIZED PAYMENTS.

Rodrigo reached for the phone.

Renata moved it away.

“You didn’t think I came here only for dinner, did you?”

👉 Renata had frozen the money, but the hidden payment file threatened to reveal why Rodrigo had allowed his assistant to treat his wife like an intruder.
