Chapter 2 - The Father Who Looked Away

Military Police reached the stage.

One officer moved the chair away.

The other positioned himself between Linda and Evelyn.

Linda began shouting that the impact had been an accident.

Everyone had seen otherwise.

General Hayes ignored her.

He helped Evelyn sit in the empty ceremonial chair beside the podium.

Her forearm was already swelling.

A medic hurried forward.

Evelyn barely noticed the pain.

She kept looking at Thomas.

“Dad?”

He still would not meet her eyes.

Derek grabbed his father’s sleeve.

“Say something.”

Thomas whispered, “Not here.”

Hayes heard him.

“That is exactly what you said five years ago.”

Evelyn looked between them.

“You’ve met?”

Thomas shook his head too quickly.

“No.”

General Hayes closed the citation folder.

“Your father signed the first statement used to discredit your report.”

The room seemed to tilt.

Evelyn’s Purple Heart had been awarded for injuries sustained during a classified evacuation in Eastern Europe.

The official citation described enemy fire, a collapsing structure, and her actions under extreme danger.

It did not name General Hayes.

It did not name the civilian intelligence team.

It did not mention the missing evidence drive.

Most of the mission remained sealed.

Evelyn had assumed classification explained the silence.

Now she understood someone had shaped that silence deliberately.

“My father signed what?”

Thomas stood.

“This is not the place.”

Hayes’s voice remained calm.

“You made it the place when your wife assaulted a decorated officer on my stage.”

Linda shouted, “She has always manipulated people!”

Evelyn flinched.

Hayes looked at the officers.

“Remove Mrs. Porter from the auditorium.”

Thomas stepped forward.

“General, please.”

Hayes turned toward him.

“You had five years to say please to your daughter.”

Linda was escorted toward the aisle.

Her composure vanished.

She looked back at Evelyn.

“You ruined Derek’s future once. You won’t do it again!”

The words echoed through the auditorium.

Derek went pale.

Evelyn stared at her stepbrother.

“What does my mission have to do with Derek?”

No one answered.

But Thomas’s silence was answer enough.

May you like

The family had not buried the mission to protect Evelyn.

They had buried it to protect her brother.
