Chapter 10 - Claire Vale Comes Forward
Claire Vale testified before a federal grand jury.
She described Marcus’s fear in the weeks before the mission.
He told her Porter Aeronautics had replaced tested components with cheaper units.
When he threatened to report it, Derek accused him of stealing company secrets.
Marcus believed he might be arrested.
Instead, he was sent overseas to inspect the failing system personally.
Claire believed the assignment was intended to silence him.
She received his final video the morning of the attack.
In it, Marcus said:
If anything happens to me, Derek Porter knew the relays would fail.
Claire took the recording to Thomas.
He met her in a private office.
He offered money.
He said releasing the video could endanger national security.
She signed the settlement because she was frightened and alone.
Then Linda visited her home.
“She told me Evelyn would be charged with treason if I spoke.”
Evelyn closed her eyes when she heard.
Linda had used her name as a threat against a grieving widow.
Claire hid the original video anyway.
Years later, she saw an article about General Hayes retiring.
She recognized him from Marcus’s mission notes.
She contacted him.
The case reopened.
Federal agents traced payments from Porter Aeronautics to several officials who delayed the investigation.
One official had already retired.
Another agreed to cooperate.
The evidence showed Thomas approved the cover-up fund.
Derek directed the false technical reports.
Linda coordinated pressure against Evelyn and Claire.
All three participated differently.
All three benefited.
When reporters learned about the grand jury, Porter Aeronautics’ stock collapsed.
The board suspended Thomas and Derek.
Employees gathered outside company headquarters demanding answers.
Evelyn watched the news alone.
She did not celebrate.
Thousands of workers had not known.
Their livelihoods were now threatened because three executives chose greed.
She asked Hayes whether the company could survive under new leadership.
“Possibly.”
“Then protect the workers.”
He looked at her.
“After what the company did?”
“The workers didn’t do it.”
Hayes smiled faintly.
