Chapter 17 - Thomas Loses the Company
Thomas pleaded guilty to obstruction, fraud, and misuse of trust assets.
He avoided prison because of his cooperation, age, and medical condition.
Instead, he received home confinement, probation, and complete financial forfeiture.
He lost the mansion.
The company.
The retirement accounts.
The artwork Linda purchased with Evelyn’s dividends.
Everything tied to the fraud was seized.
Thomas moved into a small rented apartment.
For the first time in forty years, he lived without staff.
He wrote Evelyn every week.
Most letters contained apologies.
She did not answer.
Then one letter arrived without excuses.
I knew you were telling the truth.
I chose Derek because protecting him allowed me to believe I had not failed as a father.
In doing so, I failed you completely.
Evelyn read it twice.
She still did not answer.
Forgiveness was not a reward for finally naming the crime correctly.
Months later, Thomas suffered a mild stroke.
The hospital contacted Evelyn as next of kin.
She went.
Not because the past had vanished.
Because she chose the kind of person she wanted to be.
Thomas opened his eyes and saw her beside the bed.
“You came.”
“Yes.”
“Does that mean—”
“No.”
She stopped him gently.
“It means you were sick and alone.”
Tears filled his eyes.
“I don’t deserve you.”
“That is not the question.”
“What is?”
“Whether I can help without abandoning myself.”
She arranged a care manager.
She did not bring him home.
She did not restore access to her life.
Compassion remained separate from reconciliation.
Thomas began to understand that boundaries were not cruelty.
They were the consequence of choices he had made repeatedly.
Evelyn visited once a month.
Some days they spoke.
Some days they sat silently.
He never again asked her to protect the family name.
