Chapter 8 - Christmas Morning
Daniel did not sleep.
At six in the morning, the commercial lender froze the company’s credit line.
At seven, two vendors suspended deliveries.
At eight, his chief financial officer called.
“We have a board meeting scheduled for tomorrow.”
“Cancel it.”
“I can’t. The majority shareholder requested it.”
Daniel looked toward the ceiling.
“My mother doesn’t know anything about business.”
“The trust owns sixty-two percent.”
“That was my father’s arrangement.”
“Your father’s arrangement remains legally valid.”
Daniel ended the call and threw the phone onto the sofa.
Claire entered wearing a silk robe.
“What happened?”
“The bank froze the loan.”
“Then make Margaret restore the transfers.”
“She has attorneys involved.”
Claire stopped.
“Because of Sophie?”
They both looked toward the staircase.
Sophie’s bedroom door was closed.
Claire rushed upstairs and demanded her phone.
Sophie refused.
Daniel entered behind her.
“Did you send something to Grandma?”
Sophie stood beside the bed.
“I sent her the truth.”
Claire reached for the phone.
Sophie stepped away.
“You planned to call her crazy.”
“We planned to protect this family,” Claire said.
“From the person paying for it?”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“You don’t understand what your grandmother does. She makes everyone dependent, then threatens to withdraw support.”
“She canceled it after you threw her into the snow.”
“She came here to embarrass me in front of investors.”
“She came because I asked her.”
Claire turned toward Daniel.
“We can still use the video.”
“No,” Sophie said. “I sent the full recording.”
Daniel stared at his daughter.
Sophie’s voice shook, but she continued.
“They’ll hear you telling Mom to make Grandma angry.”
Claire seized Sophie’s phone.
Daniel did not stop her.
Sophie backed away.
“You’re both scared because Grandma finally said no.”
Daniel looked as though he had been slapped.
Downstairs, the doorbell rang.
A courier delivered formal notices from Evelyn Brooks.
One prohibited Daniel from representing that Margaret guaranteed his debts.
Another demanded preservation of all company records.
The third announced the emergency shareholder meeting.
Claire read the final page.
“If they remove you, what happens to the house?”
Daniel did not answer.
The mortgage payment had been due that morning.
Without Margaret’s transfer, it failed.
The account now showed PAST DUE.
Outside, snow continued falling over the home they had presented as proof of their success.
Inside, Sophie took the red ornament Margaret had mailed the previous year and hung it near the top of the tree.
It contained a photograph of Thomas holding her as a baby.
