Chapter 10 - The Petition Filed in Secret
Two days before the board meeting, Daniel filed an emergency petition seeking temporary control of Margaret’s finances.
He claimed her Christmas decision proved she was unstable.
He submitted Claire’s edited video.
He attached the false doctor’s report.
He told the court Margaret had become paranoid, vindictive, and incapable of understanding how her decisions harmed dependents.
But Evelyn was prepared.
She filed travel records proving Margaret had never met the doctor.
She submitted the full recording from Claire’s phone.
She included bank statements showing the transfers were voluntary.
She also supplied the forged guarantee Daniel gave the lender.
The emergency judge refused to grant Daniel immediate control.
Instead, she scheduled a hearing and ordered both sides to preserve evidence.
The judge also required the doctor to appear.
Within hours, the doctor’s attorney contacted Evelyn.
Dr. Spencer Rowe had never evaluated Margaret.
He admitted Vivian Grant, Claire’s mother, had asked him to sign a “preliminary family observation letter.”
Claire later altered the language and attached his electronic signature to a formal competency statement.
Daniel claimed he knew nothing about the alteration.
Messages from his phone proved otherwise.
He had written:
Make sure the report sounds serious enough for emergency authority.
Claire answered:
It will. After Christmas, everyone will understand why.
The court referred the documents to prosecutors for possible fraud.
Claire deleted her social-media post.
It was too late.
Parents had saved it.
So had investigators.
At home, Sophie overheard Daniel blaming Claire.
“You handled the doctor.”
“You approved every page,” Claire replied.
“You said Margaret would panic and restore the money.”
“You were the one who threw her out.”
Their alliance began breaking under pressure.
Sophie recorded part of the argument from the hallway.
Then she packed a backpack and called Margaret.
“I don’t feel safe here.”
Margaret’s heart tightened.
“Are they hurting you?”
“No. They’re screaming. Dad says everything is Mom’s fault. Mom says he lied about owning the house.”
Margaret contacted Evelyn and followed her instructions carefully.
She did not simply take Sophie.
She called local authorities and requested a welfare check.
When officers arrived, Sophie told them she wanted to stay with her grandmother temporarily.
Daniel objected.
Then an officer noticed shattered glass beside the wall where Daniel had thrown a picture frame.
Sophie left with Margaret that evening under a temporary family-safety arrangement.
