Chapter 15 - Sophie Chooses the Truth
Family court reviewed Sophie’s temporary living arrangement.
Daniel argued that Margaret manipulated his daughter with money.
Claire claimed Sophie belonged with her maternal grandparents.
Sophie asked to speak privately with the judge.
She brought the Christmas card she mailed to Margaret.
She brought the full recording from Claire’s phone.
She described the arguments, broken picture frame, and pressure to blame her grandmother.
“I don’t want to stop loving my parents,” she said. “But I don’t want to live where everyone lies and then calls Grandma dangerous for noticing.”
The judge allowed Sophie to remain with Margaret temporarily.
Both parents received supervised visitation until the criminal and financial cases were resolved.
Margaret did not celebrate.
She wanted Sophie safe, not separated from her parents forever.
During the first supervised visit, Daniel spent twenty minutes explaining why Margaret was responsible for the family’s problems.
Sophie interrupted him.
“Did you forge her signature?”
Daniel looked toward the supervisor.
“This is not an appropriate question.”
“It’s the only question.”
“I was trying to save the business.”
“That means yes.”
Daniel lowered his voice.
“You wouldn’t have your school, your house, or your life without that business.”
“Grandma paid for all three.”
His face hardened.
“That is what she wants you to believe.”
Sophie stood.
“I saw the bank records.”
Daniel stared at his daughter.
The same financial truth he hid from investors had reached his own child.
“Do you hate me?” he asked.
Sophie’s eyes filled.
“No.”
The answer seemed to surprise him.
“I hate what you did.”
For the first time, Daniel had no argument.
After the visit, Sophie returned to Margaret’s car.
“Was I cruel?”
“No.”
“I wanted him to admit it.”
“So do I.”
“What if he never does?”
Margaret took her hand.
“Then we build our lives around the truth without waiting for his permission.”
The company restructuring continued.
Margaret met employees who feared losing jobs.
She approved funds to finish every active customer project.
She sold unnecessary corporate assets and appointed the CFO as interim president.
Within three months, Hale Heritage returned to stable operations.
Workers who once credited Daniel for saving the company learned Margaret had protected their paychecks after he endangered them.
At an employee meeting, they gave her a standing ovation.
Margaret almost cried.
