Chapter 13 - The Signature Under the Tree
Investigators recovered the original forged guarantee from Daniel’s home office.
The document contained Margaret’s copied signature.
A second page bore Claire’s handwriting.
Use trust statement from March. It shows consistent deposits.
Claire insisted the note referred only to organizing paperwork.
Computer records showed she had scanned Margaret’s signature from an old Christmas card.
Daniel then placed it onto the guarantee letter.
The same scanner contained drafts of the guardianship petition and altered medical report.
Prosecutors opened an investigation into bank fraud, identity theft, and attempted financial exploitation of an older adult.
Daniel and Claire were not immediately arrested.
But their passports were flagged, and financial accounts were frozen.
Daniel called Margaret.
This time, she answered with Evelyn listening.
“You sent police to my house.”
“The evidence sent them.”
“I’m your son.”
“Yes.”
“Then tell them it was a misunderstanding.”
“It was not.”
“No money was stolen from you.”
“You used my name to borrow millions.”
“The business needed time.”
“You planned to declare me incompetent.”
Claire could be heard in the background.
“Ask her about Sophie.”
Daniel lowered his voice.
“If you don’t help us, Sophie will lose both parents.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
There it was again.
Her granddaughter used as leverage.
“Sophie will be cared for.”
“You would take my daughter?”
“I would never take her from parents capable of protecting her. Right now, you are asking a child to protect you.”
Daniel’s breathing became heavy.
“Dad would hate what you’re doing.”
Margaret looked at Thomas’s photograph.
“Your father tried to prevent this.”
“He never believed in me.”
“He believed you needed boundaries.”
“You chose him over me when he was alive, and now you’re doing it again.”
“No, Daniel. I chose you so often that I stopped choosing what was right.”
The line went silent.
Then Daniel whispered, “You can still fix this.”
Margaret’s voice broke.
“I cannot fix what you refuse to admit.”
She ended the call.
That evening, Sophie found her grandmother crying in the pantry.
Margaret had remained composed through lawyers, investigators, and the board meeting.
But loving Daniel did not make the truth painless.
Sophie wrapped both arms around her.
“You don’t have to be strong every second.”
